Carpet as target or backstop
« on: September 11, 2011, 10:05:00 PM »
For those of us using hanging layers of carpet as a backstop, are you using the carpet as the actual target or do you hang a target in front of it and use the carpet to catch wild shots and flyers. I have 4 layers of carpet with a layer of conveyor belt behind them.

I use two layers and a truck bed mat as a back stop for 3D targets.

Jock,I'm using the 2 layers of carpet as a backstop for my target,it stops the fliers. I do have a couple of targets made for 3D where I use three layers of carpet as the target and it works well for me. I don't know how well it will standup only time will tell . Maxx

Just don't expect even 3 layers to stop a brodhead! I have 3 layers hanging with about an inch separating them to catch a wild shot that misses my layered target. Curiosity made me try it. Didn't slow my 170 ZW 2-blade down much.

A few years ago I built one with 4 layers of carpet.  It is 7 foot wide and 8 foot tall. Used a 1" X 3"s to support and separate the carpet, (the bar).  I then built a frame legs out of 4" X 4" post, a header out of 2" X 10" and additonal lumber.  Using the header I screwed on scrap angled wood from making a stair stringers.  These angles support the small roof that is shingled.  I have placed two sheets of plastic on the front and back which helps keep the sun off the carpet.  The carpet bar is supported by chains off the header.
This is used as a back stop only.

4 layers of carpet should stop most anything.

I use 2 layers and it stops my field points just fine. (but I am only shooting 41# @ 29")

Bladepeek! I agree the carpets won"t stop a broadhead even after going through my homemade target.
Downtime! Good job on the backstop. The roof on top will stop some of the weather. I like it.
