I live just across the mountain from Maggie Valley. I don't know of any shoots until the weekend of July 21-22. In Mills River, near the Asheville airport, there will be a local shoot called Powder Creek. Nice bunch of folks running the shoot and attending. On the weekend of July 27, 28, 29 I am having a primitive skills get together at my place. If you are around then, you are welcome to come play with us.
As far as stump shooting in the Pisgah National Forest, I kind of doubt it. Call the Ranger Station in Asheville about it.
Not Far west of Maggie is the Oconaluftee Village near Smokemont, NC. Interesting Native American  cultural center. Also, Cades Cove, not to far from there. Cades Cove is an excellent place to view deer and bears, either from your car, bike or walking.        Pat

I'm in Waynesville, just a few miles away from Maggie. Pat pretty much summed up the shoot situation. You could visit Right On Target Archery, which is located nearby on Jonathan Creek. They are more compound oriented, but have a few trad items and a small 3D course. Theres also Cataloochee Valley for more Elk viewing.
As for the stump shooting, the answer I got from a warden was "no" during closed seasons.

Thanks for the help guys. A sudden death in my family has the trip on hold for now. Pat B thank you for the invite. I thought the stump shooting on the National Forest may be off limits but wanted to find out. If I do make it now the trip will only be couple of days and the bow will stay home.
