Squirrel tactics
«

I like to be out in the morning at about light and stay until they start napping, around nine. Is there another time of day that is good to be out there? I have to take my son to school and can't get out before 9am.

I find them out all day long, with big surges of activity early and late. Just like any game animal, the hours prior to some weather coming in they are out in force.

I hunt mine during school hours. You will always find a few out mid-day gathering this time a year.
Rolled in Jiffy cornbread mix and fried with bacon, yummmmm!

I really have no tactics. My best squirrel hunting has been when I'm out roving. Usually find a good area where there cutting and just hide out for a while. If nothing happens in a little while move on to the next place. Just enjoying life and having fun and possibley a squirel dinner,Don't get no better than that!

I finally got my first squirrel the other day hunting deer. Never saw a deer, but as I sat there on a log, the little guy decided to play around in the grass about 15 ft in front of me.
Think I should take up squirrel hunting and maybe I'll get a shot at a deer? Hmmm...

Sounds great everybody! Do you think you find them more around hickories or just as much around oaks?
It seems like I see more around hickories.

If a squirrel is playing hide & seek with you on a tree trunk carry a 50'-100' piece of small string/cord with you and a feather or piece of bandana. Tie the feather and cord to a bush and shake it, the squirrel will peak around to take look and give you a shot.....Old trick

Carry some rocks with you. If one is playing hide and seek, pull one out and toss it out in the leaves on the side of the tree the squirrel is on. If you forget, just grab a stick and toss it.
Then be ready...They will move around to your side but only for a sec.
If you find a place that looks like it should have squirrels but don't see any (i.e. lots of acorns or pecans ect.) Just sit still for a bit. Many times they will be hiding and will pop out when they think its safe.
