3 under bows shoot quieter when shooting split
« on: September 15, 2011, 08:03:00 PM »
Own 2 bows tillered for 3 under. BW psax and lost creek judge. Just started getting back into shooting split finger and notice both bows shoot respectably quieter this way.

Just wondering if anyone else have had similar experience??

Yes sir, I have the same issue. I was just thinkin earlier I am goin to really try to shoot split again. I used too and shot well but after I switched to 3 under, split doesn't feel the same.

I have thought about switching also, split its a way quieter method of shooting. Three under is noiser regardless of how the bow is tillered for me. Chad

I am still yet to find a bow that is as quiet shooting 3 under, even ILF when I can adjust the tiller. I am shooting the quietest bow I have ever shot 3 under right now. A 64" ACS

I just can not shoot split. I been shooting 3 under for 10 years now, and I just cant make it feel right. But any bow I ever shot has been quieter split. Ive never had the chance to shoot a 3 under tillered bow, but would love to try it out.

Just about every bow I have ever shot - no matter how it was tillered - shot quieter split fingered than 3 under.

Me, too. I think it has to do with where the arrow is on the string in relation to the pressure point of the middle finger. With split, the difference is much less. I bet a guy with really fat fingers would have a heck of time shooting 3 under. Like this guy:  http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KagJdCnzfEg/TMB5o0ZXLuI/AAAAAAAABHc/6DxsE5lD53o/s1600/DenisCyplenkov2.jpg

Shooting split finger has always seemed to make a bow shoot quieter upon arrow release than when shooting three under.

I think much has to do with hand position on the string. It is easier to put more twist on the string shooting three under than split finger. With split you feel the arrow and if you use a tab with a spacer you tend to have a better string hand. I shoot 3 under and I always make it a point to check my string hand in the pre draw phase of the shot, also helps to ensure I have a relaxed string hand, makes for a softer release.

It's also about string oscillation.  The point that your hand is putting pressure on the string is farther from the point that the arrow's mass is sitting on the string.  When you release, the string begins to move forward.  It takes a fraction of a second longer to get the string behind the arrow moving than the est of teh string.  This creates wave, or oscillation in the string.  Happens to a split finger shooter too, but the oscillation is less pronounced because the two points are closer together.

For me they all shoot quieter and less accurately split so I shoot 3 under.

Jeff Strubberg nailed it. The string is oscillating at a much different rate below the arrow than above it with 3 under but not so much different split finger.

Went to 3 under several years back due to injury on index finger.  My shooting became very good out to at least 30 yds.  But noise always bothered me.  Only way I found to quiet bow was B-50 with good silencers.  Finger has since healed and for noise reasons I have gone back to split.  Nicely quiet but has taken many hours of practice to get anywheres close to the accuracy of 3 under.  I just have trouble getting the same consistent release time after time but darn I hate the noise of 3 under.
