Question for bowyers about riser wood
« on: July 09, 2007, 01:29:00 PM »
Ive got a solid piece of Mahogany that came from a friends friend who is a custom guitar maker, its approx. 24 in.x 2.25x 6-7 in. wide, still has part of a guitar back tracing on it. Will this wood make a good riser or combo wood in a riser? It was given to me to make a custom stock for a .36 cal. muzzleloader I no longer have. If it would might have a custom recurve or longbow made using it, if I dont do that may trade it for something I can use... Any informed opinions appreciated... Thanks, Dean heres a pic of  the wood up close..

O.K. Heres the actual size was just guessing when I posted, its 32 in.x 1.75 in.x 5.75 wide.

I  think its Honduran but cant swear to it, it has a sorta dark pink look to it or reddish color maybe. Is there a definite way to tell as I have no way of getting in contact with the guy now to find out?

You can tell by the weight more than anything...there are a lot of different varieties of Mohog...the heavy dense stuff would work fine for a bow riser i'm thinking. the lighter weight mohog doesn't have the structural integrity

Its pretty heavy, seems to be really dense, has to be good quality as the guy made custom guitar backs from it..

If you have doubts, you could always combine it with another wood. Zebra wood would look nice with a piece of mohogany.
