I got a small box of older broadheads. I it has some ma-3 125s. I can sharpen most heads but these are giving me a hard time. Sharp just not hunting sharp. Any help?

I have killed deer with them. We used to heat them cherry red with a torch and dip in oil. It would temper them some. I always had a hard time sharping them, but now I've learned how to use a file on them. I file front to back while in a vise. Then strob them with leather paddle. They make a big hole.
We used to also sharpen the back edge so it cut if the arrow was pulled out.

Good luck! learning to sharpen anything just takes lots of practice.

The problem with getting a real sharp edge results from their construction-that of 3 identical pieces. So the edge you are trying to sharpen techinically does not have metal in its center since theree are two pieces of metal brazed together creating the blade/edge. You will never get heads of this construction sharp as those with edges constructed of one piece of metal.

The only way I ever overcame the double edge was to sharpen each edge with a single bevel.  They are a pain to sharpen and, IMO are not a very good head.  Good for small game.

A better three blade similar to the MA is the Bodkin, but they may not be around any more.  They made a small and larger size.  Only one I have left has a meat saw cut part way through it from one of my Dad's deer.  :)   He would not shoot anything but a Bodkin or Bear Razorhead.

For big game, I've pretty much gone to a good two blade and left the three and four blades behind.

i think I will hang on to the deadheads. I have used them in the past and like them alot.I am unable to bow hunt for the first time in 35 years.little bored and just living though you guys until i heal up. So i thought i would try to put an edge on the ma-3s.
