Question to arrow builders about taper plane jigs
« on: October 06, 2011, 12:23:00 PM »
I have been toying with the idea of trying several different tapers on wood shafts.  I have, in the past, run the shafts through a home made taper jig that does the taper via a drill spinning the shaft between two abrasive walls wit the taper set.

My question is, has anyone tried this Woodchuck Taper jig and plane and if so can you adjust it to get more length on the taper as well as vary the taper over the length.  I have watched the
3 Rivers video and can not tell if it can be done by looking at the jig set up.

That being said... anyone out there have a made jig that might do this....  Any comments or ideas..

Thanks

Two pieces of aluminum L angle bolted to a board face to face with the ability to adjust them closer or further from each other.  Sandpaper glued to the faces.  Shaft spun in an electric drill.

I don't have one, but that is the way I've seen it done by two local guys.  I'm still using the piece of wood with a groove and a hand plane.  Maybe time to upgrade!

Bruce,
Yes you can adjust it...You only need to adjust the plane very slightly so you don't get no "Chatter"...You can also do a Barrel taper if you prefer that but I never tried it...I really like mine when I use it and sand the shaft lightly just to smooth out any facet's that might be left and to round the shaft...

Bruce,
STOP and read this!  I may have mislead you in the adjustment thing...You can taper up to 10 inch's and flip the arrow if I remember what I read in the instructions and do a barrel taper ...I can't find my instructions but I know I tapered the last 10 " of my shafts but not the intire shaft from front to back if that's what you mean...You can adjust the height by placing the tapered end of the nock into a block that rides up and down with a set screw under the block and that determines the shaft size say like 11/32 and 23/64th...I mark where the plane starts to touch my ten inch line I draw onto the shaft then start to plane from that mark...I misread your post and was thinking about the plane being adjusted not the channel the shaft lay's in...Sorry about that and I'll send you a P.m. hoping you didn't go ordering one yet...Keefer's <><

I got it...  That is my problem...  I want to taper more than 10".  I may just try and build one.  I pretty much know what they are and the alu.  material can be boughi so additional length could be made...
