what angles on the KME knife sharpener?
« on: October 06, 2011, 02:25:00 PM »
What angle do you guys use for pocket knives and thicker bladed hunting knives (i've heard for broadheads 23*)? Just got my KME in from KK and can't wait to sharpen some tools   :goldtooth:

23 degrees ?  thanks - I will look forward to also hearing if other guys also use that for broadhead touch up on the KME knife sharpener, after doing them initially on the KME broadhead sharpener.  More curious than anything else - I generated a ton of sweat last year doing a new dozen Stos on the broadhead sharpner, but it took next to nothing to touch them up this fall.  Simply thinking that if I go on a trip, would be nice to only carry one system with me, not two.

I like 25 degrees for both knives and broadheads - plenty sharp and keeps an edge.

I match it to what the factory grind is, dont know if its a good idea but i dont have to do a lot of metal removal this way. But with the gentlemans post just above me i just might rethink that.

I have a knife from Diamondblade (best Christmas gift ever!) and I use 19 degrees.  They use a process called friction forging on the blade and it makes the metal much harder without getting more brittle.  It keeps that low angle edge for a loooong time.

Everything else, I use 23 degrees.

25 for me as well.Unless I want a special edge for something then maybe a 19-20. that would be for a re-dress on a razor blade or a fine edge for other chores, most often in the shop,it don't last long in the field.

I use 25 general for hunting knives, most broadheads and heavier blade folders.  I use 22 for thinner blade knives like my Swiss army, some broadheads, and some kitchen stuff. Then 19 for my Kershaw boning filet knife combo.  I think about 15 or 11 for razor blades and stuff like that; I can’t recall because I have not done them in a long time.

Best thing to do if you don’t want to rework a blade is hit the bevel with marker and work that off with a fine stone so you really don’t take off much metal.  Try different angles till you get the marker all off and then make a note.

You want to get ole Ron at kme going, ask him about compound bevels!   :jumper:

Broadhead Pro is 25* depending on the width of the head...wider the head, the angle changes...same with Knife Sharpener...

I use 25* on my BH's and also my smaller knives (4" and less).  I use 30* on my 6" buck knife. All of them shave hair off my left forearm.  Thanks KME.  You are the new "Nair".

Do you guys vary the degrees with the thickness of stones- I still have struggles getting that burr and I wonder if it comes with switching from the rough diamond to the stones.  ??
