Emergency Quick Fix Tips For The Field

I was getting ready to tune a spare string tonight and got to pondering. Aside from breaking a string in the field where your done unless you have a spare. What are some neat tricks that have saved your hunt in the field? String nocking points, duct tape silencers what have you, kinda like Dennis Kamstras section in TBM. Go ahead and shoot, what ya got? You just might save another fellas hunt

I used some serving thread to wrap the fletch on an arrow before it came completely off. Of course, one has to be disorganized enough to have the thread with one instead of in the tackle box where it belongs.

i always carry a travel box of dental floss with me in all my packs weather fishing or hunting with dogs, for  deer or just walking around . its tough  wont rot and can be used for many things .

Unwaxed dental floss has many use, always have some in my pack.

I also carry a little tube of super glue for fixing fixing feathers, nocks, ect...

Electrical tape wraped just under the handle grip, Used to tape my tag to the leg of a just killed critter, fix cracked arrows ect...

Throw a few plastic wire ties in your pack.....don't weigh anything, can fix quiver ,pack frame,zipper pull,put a tag threw a deers ear, keep your boot on and I'm sure there are many more things you can do. Oh yea, keep some blind material in place......the list goes on and on........Good idea for a post Izzy

CA glue, 550 cord, and duct tape can fix most things

i allways have 2 spare shoe laces in my pack, never had used them for my shoes but they found service for a host of other things!

Super glue, lighter and some combustible (cotton and Vaseline will start a wet wood fire)
Second flashlight, new batteries, GPS and a small sharpening stone, rain suit, extra nocks (I shoot GTs       )

A lighter, some paracord, some wire, a small roll of duct tape and a multi tool. You'd be suprised what you can do with just a few things. My huntin partner and I once fixed a broken ball joint on a 63 Valliant with a wire hanger and a jockstrap that we found in the trunk. it was pretty fragile, but it got us home.

One tip I have for the tape users is to pull the cardboard roll out of the middle until you get down to tape. Squash the roll flat (the 2 sides will stick to each other)and it takes up hardly any room in your pack or pocket.

If you can't fix it with Duct Tape, you need a new one.

I once fixed an M-60A1 tank with a ball point pen insert...  Really, the mechanical linkage between the gas pedal and the engine came apart and we weren't going anywhere.  I took apart my gi issue pen and stuck the insert between the connecting rods and we made it out to the assembly area...

For easy to carry duct tape take an old credit card (I use the door key from my last hotel stay) and wrap it several turns with the tape.  I prefer gorilla tape but its spendy.  

A small LED flashlight.  I almost always have my Fenix E05 single AAA flashlight with me on my keychain.  Awesome tiny light that will last for hours and throws a lot of light for its size/weight.  

Most of my outdoorsy boots have para-cord laces.

I always have three ways of making fire--usually a cheap bic lighter, a fire steel, and some waterproof matches.  

A knife is a must...doesn't really matter what.  Just something to cut with.  You don't need to spend a couple of c notes on a survival knife made to pry open bank vaults.  Back in the 70's I taught wilderness survival to Boy Scouts for three summers in a row and all I ever used was a Buck 119.  You can still get a Buck 119 at Walmart for $35.   I still have that knife and its built dozens of shelters and started many more fires, carved lots of sticks etc.  Its even got a few deer under its belt though I prefer a smaller knife for deer.

Water or a way to make it is a must.  I almost always have my Katadyn pocket filter with me when I'm out in the big woods... In the woods near the house I don't mess with it.  At the very least some purifying tablets like Pur.

Something that hasn't been mentioned yet is a whistle...If you don't have no cell phone and hopefully nothing bad ever happens to ya but a whistle can help in having someone locate you if you're lost,hurt,or trying to locate a buddy..Some animals will stop munching on grub and think "what the heck kind of Bird was that"!   Now I got to go find one and add it to my pack!
