brace height question
« on: October 20, 2011, 10:07:00 AM »
I just picked up a used recurve without a string. The bow says 62" so I got a 62 amo string. The brace height with this string, with no twist, is 10 inches from the deepest part of the handle. Does that seem high?

Sounds very high to me.  Some bows take different length strings (3" shorter than bow length instead of 4).

Sounds like you need a 1" longer string.

Very high.  As a rule of thumb brace height is 1/8 of the AMO length (for a rough starting point).

Seem way too high to me. I would think more in the neighborhood of 7 1/2" to 8 1/2". Put the make and model of the bow up and there will be guys on here that can give you the proper brace height.

If it's a recurve generally you'll have a string length that is 3"-4" shorter than the AMO length. 62" recurve = 59"-58" string.

I just measured the string and its 57" so an inch too short. Thats irritating. Thanks gang.

I just sold a bow that did the same thing.I thought the best thing to do might be to get a longer string and just twist till I get it down to around 8".

If it was me, I would buy a 58" string and then start playing around with the brace height between 7 1/2"-8 1/2".

Ok so as it turns out the string length is measured under 100 pounds of tension. I hung the thing from my weight bench with 100 pounds on it and measured the length at 58" so apparently you have to break these in. I realize now Ive only ever bought pre-stretched strings. Duh moment. Thanks again gang.
