I like the smaller one think its called "the litlle can", H.S ?, not quite as loud. Has called in a few smaller bucks when using it blind, in thick cover, and has called in a nice one from across a small field, he was going the other way, called twice he turned and came to me

Please keep in mind this has been my experience and interpretation.

--Have rattled and grunted-in up to seven bucks in a season. May go a couple of years without any success. May also spook numerous deer and have gotten busted more times than I know. Have never rattled in a mature deer. Note: I don't count calling success until I have gotten the buck w/i bow range.  

--Have canned in three times as many bucks in a season. Have canned in mature bucks and actually harvested one and let two other min P & Y's walk...had success utilizing the can each season. To my recollection, I haven't spooked nor been busted, yet I am confident there were deer that saw me of which are I was unaware.

Note: A premier outfitter in Iowa, of which I am quite familiar, harvests more trophies by using the can than by all other calling methods combined.

Like the fact that the can is effective for both blind and site calling. Also, like the fact instead of spooking the deer, they may choose to simply ignore me. Have had the same bucks, on many occasions, which ignored me a 1/2 hr to 2 hours earlier, respond and come in after calling once more.

Was not a believer or motivated to try the can when they 1st come out. Two bucks were right under my stand, when a hunting bud from Ohio canned. The two bucks immediatley turned and promptly headed with purpose in his direction. They both ended up right under his stand. My interest was now stimulated.

I will say it again- learn to use your voice.  It is so easy and you can vary sounds and volume . . . besides it does not cost a dime!  Every person I show it to says "That's easy!"  Yup. . . call in mature bucks every year- harvested many this way.

It is the only call I've used with consistent success since 1996.  Grunts don't always work and sometimes spook deer.  The can works every time when deer are visible.  The can works when blind calling.  I called in 4 bucks last fall in the first week of November using just 2 rolls of the can.  They got into 2 drawn out sparring matches and split off.

I forgot to add that I put the can on the ground weighted on one end and use the bow haul rope to tilt it up for the call.  It seems to keep deer from looking up.

I use a mixture of long and short. I also vary the number of holes I cover to adjust the volume each time. And I don't necessarily worry about "mistakes". I've heard deer make some pretty screwed up sounds in the wild. To me it's just like turkey hunting.

To me the key is always going to be the ease of use and using it enough. I try to remember when I am hunting how often and vary it thru the hunt. I try to never get into a rhythm with it. Just vary the number of bleats, time between bleats and time between using the can.

Anyway for whatever it's worth that has worked for me in GA, SC, AL, and NE and KS. I don't think I've ever spooked deer but I believe a lot have just ignored me. But I have killed more than my share.

I have both the Primos original estrous doe can and the Primos fawn bleat. Both work at times. I called in a buck, spooked him when my stand sqeaked, then called him back in, and killed him. That one was sighted first. I've called in several bucks with it that I sighted first but for one reason or another never took or had a shot.

I've had less success blind calling with either the can or a grunt tube. I've rattled in several bucks, but none that were mature enough to shoot.

The fawn bleat seems to work better with does. It must arouse their maternal instincts. The problem with it is they come in jumpy because they are looking for a fawn in distress, I guess. Sometimes they ignore it, but I have watched does ignore real fawns bleating like crazy. I think once they are trying to ditch the fawns, the fawn bleat is no longer effective. If you are looking to score on a doe early in the season, they will work better. It sometimes gets the attention of the bucks during the prerut faze. I guess they think a doe is trying to dump the fawns, so she can breed. They will come in less jumpy than the does because they are looking for something different. I haven't managed to get a mature buck in this way yet, but I wouldn't discount it at the right time of the year.

Any call will work sometimes, but none of them work every time. I certainly wouldn't abandon a call because it failed once or twice. Timing can be very important.

ive called in more deer with a "can" call than all others put together.  sooo easy to use, and heres a tip, i dont ever turn em over.  blow in the hole in the bottom your thumb is supposed to cover, and it is a super simple mouth call. you can adjust volume, length, anything...
love can calls.

Tried blowing into my can this evening. Wow, that works really well.

Didn't bring anything in, but it sounded great and was much more consistent than turning the can over.

Could you expand on this? Maybe make a video? Intrigued minds are wanting to know.

--But, I have had success using the can the Primos version.

I've carried both the original and the "Li'l" cans (Primos) ever since they came out. I use the little one most of the time. Used to have a lot of luck with them (just haven't had much of any kind of luck hunting the last 4 years - with or without using them - and this one is even worse so far). I like them a lot, and have faith in them. I'll have to try that blowing in the bottom trick.

I made a post here saying that I haven't had much luck with them. Well today I saw a nice buck about 60 yards out. I gave it a try. He bolted for the next county. I saw no other reason for him to bolt.

LOL .......... about 20 years ago primos came out with a "fawn in distress" call as well as an acompanying how to video .......... The experts on the video said if you want to call in a buck thats with a doe all you have to do is call the doe and the buck will follow .

 The Fawn in distress call was claimed to be a sure thing at calling in does . And in fact the does on the video came in on a dead run . At the time I was in my experimental phase of being a bowhunter and would often try some of these off the wall tactics,so I bought one of the wonderful calls and the first three does I tried it on are probably still running today . I'm sure they at least made it to the next county over . I threw that call in the trash and made a note to self to not believe everything the famous TV heros tell us !!!!!

Actually the video and the call worked just exactly like it was designed to do .......... it separated several thousand "experimenters" from their hard earned money.
