Hoyt EXCEL ILF or Something Else??

Hey all,

I was planning on picking up a Hoyt Excel ILF riser to use for target and hunting.  I thought before I jumped I would see what else was out there that is getting good reviews.

My budget is limited, unfortunately.  I would love to have a TITAN or DALAA, but they are too much for me.

Others I have tossed around are the TradTech APEX at 17 inches and the TradTech Pinnacle II at 19 inches.  I know Dryad, Morrison and Sky make beautiful ILF risers, but I think they are out of my price range too. Can anyone verify?

The only other thing I go back and forth on is wood vs. metal.  Those laminate risers could be made to look really good with some skinned out limbs.  I've also never had a wood riser ILF bow.

Any ideas, comments or thoughts?


I wonder if the HIGH end ILF riser makers ever have a "Scratch & Dent" sale????

Keep your eye out for a used one, I just sold a Titan setup for $400 on this site, I have another but I'm keeping that one    The one I sold I bought used off of this site, they do show up.

For the money an Excel with a used set of limbs is hard to beat. I just sold mine for 225, heck of a deal for a great shooting bow.

The Excel 21" with a set of decent limbs is the best bang for the buck in archery ... if you are going to do a bit of target I'd stay with the longer riser ... but I'm a longer bow type of guy .

I've had about every thing or tried every thing from top of the price range to the bottom.I think you would be hard pressed to beat the excel riser and a decent set of limbs for the price.The one i shot had the black max wood glass limbs.And it was a great bow. For any price.

I'm hunting with the Excel 21" Riser and 55# Tradtech Black Max Longbow Limbs ( set at 53#@27" )and it is one sweet shooting bow . My money would deffo go on the same set-up again and spend the rest on accessories and tuning bits .

I would be looking at the 21 inch riser.  I have a set of short limbs too.  On my ProLine WARF I just sold it gave me a draw weight of about 45 pounds or so, give or take.  The ProLine was right at 21 inches long so I figure it would be close to what I was shooting on that riser.

On the Excels, what type of rest setup do you fellas use or prefer?  I have seen where a lot use the flipper and a plunger, but there are also a lot that use the furniture leg pads to build up a rest and use that.  If I went with the Excel I would want to keep it simple like that unless there were real advantages to using a flipper and plunger setup.

Any advice on that?

Main advantage is the ease of tuning a flipper and plunger setup.    Shooting off the rest you have to do a lot of tuning the arrow to the bow,  If you have a plunger and flipper you can tune the bow to the arrow making it a bit easier.

With the flipper/plunger you can also shoot vanes instead of feathers witch is nice if you hunt when its wet or raining.
