Google earth then food sources. If the area is small and only seems to be a travel area I look for funnels or a place to put a stand That can serve as a look-out. Well used trails in the area are always good but most of the deer I have killed weren't on one.

I like to see topo maps of the area, aerial photos, put feet on the ground to check food scource, deer sign(trails, rubs) from previous seasons, and possible stand locations.
