New Guys Arrow Fletching Question
« on: November 09, 2011, 11:50:00 AM »
I am getting into Archery again but was not real experienced before and it's been about 25 years since the last time I used a bow.

I have an older 50# Bear Tigercat 58 inch bow. Thinking about buying Easton Legacy Arrows mid to heavy weight (Sizes 2215; 2117 or 2020 not sure yet) but was wondering about ordering 3 or 4 inch fletching, if it makes much of a difference?

I am also not sure of which wing rite or left to request?

I shoot right handed and off the shelf.

Any thoughts, suggestions about what I should think about or do before ordering arrows would be greatly appreciated?

If you learn to bare-shaft tune your arrows, a minimum amount of fletching is all you need to keep the arrows on course.  3" fletching would be fine for tuned arrows used with field points.

Since you're not sure of what size arrow to use, I assume you haven't done any arrow tuning, so you will probably need bigger fletching to straighten the arrow out.  If you intend to shoot broadheads, you need bigger fletching, tuned or not.  For someone who has not tuned the arrows to the bow, or for someone who wants to shoot broadheads, I would recommend 5" fletching.  Some people want to shoot the same arrows for practice as they do hunting, and will use 5" fletching for everything.  The only disadvantage to that is that the arrow velocity will drop off considerably after about 30 yards.

right or left wing makes no difference. I would suggest not choosing the 3" fletch, 4 should do it, 5 will work unless your shafts are way off in spine. Id suggest shooting for a while before you bother with the bare shaft tuning, as long as your arrows fly well enough for targets.

This is worth studying when you get to that point. When I recently got back into archery after 10 years, It took a while to get good enough so that my tuning results made any sense.

Searching the powwow forum will answer nearly all your questions.

Hi Ray

The arrows you mention
may be a little on the stiff side for a 50# bow.
You might want to try something like a 2016 or 2018.
I use 5" left wing fletches for everything.

I always use three fletch 5". Or 4 fletch 4". Even when you have fine tuned . Much better stability and flight.
