South Carolina WMA's
« on: November 14, 2011, 02:03:00 PM »
I'm going to be in SC visiting my daughter and we wanted to do some deer hunting at the nearby WMA's.

I've read the rules regarding antler restriction and license requirements on the DNR website but I wanted to know if there are any particular WMA rules I should know. It looks to be bow only with the season ending December 22.

Thanks

I guess I should mention the WMA's are in Pickens and Anderson counties.

If you are talking about Keowee and Fant's Grove, yes, the season does end on 12/22. The "Named WMAs" have specific requirements. Those two are bow hunting only. In other units, the season ends on 12/31. You can bow hunt during any open deer season. In Game Zones 1&2, you can take either sex and there are no antler restrictions, unless the specific WMA says otherwise. There is no restriction on bow weight or broadhead size, either.

A little north of those two is the Jocassee Gorges area. It's open until 12/31 and is full of deer and hogs. It's tough hunting, though, and is mostly all hardwoods and steep drainages.

When are you coming?

Fant's Grove has the specific antler restriction but not Keowee.

Thanks

I'll be there next week but as most family holiday times I'm not yet sure when I'll get to hunt. That's the reason I was looking at those two areas since they are close to where we will be.
