New from PA and need help (long bow)
« on: December 07, 2011, 10:14:00 PM »
Hello,
First post and hope Pow wow is the best place to post this.  I joined looking for info on making the transition to traditional and trying to find a re-curve that will fit me (32" draw.) While watching the classifieds and ***** I couldn't stop my finger from clicking "buy it now" on a long bow that just came up. Seller did not know the brand or draw weight and it has no string! but for $45 delivered I rolled the dice. I would really appreciate anyone that could take a look at it and tell me how to order a string for it and offer any opinions. I will hope it is a weight I can pull, then if it works out I will ask about arrows etc. etc.  Thanks for any help.
Here it is.
**** item #140658381193

edit.  ***** link won't work for some reason. If you search on the item number it works.    Sorry

I'm guessing from your profile info that you may be close to Meadville, so you might drop by this place with the bow and have someone check it out. The pictures don't show enough to tell the true condition of the bow but at that price even if it hangs over the fireplace its not to bad of a deal.

Is your 32" draw a measured length or is that what your compound bow is? With trad equipment you will be adding about 2-3# per inch past 28" on most bows.

Thank you guys. John that is a good lead to meadville field archers.  I have heard of it and it is not far, had no idea of their website or that they were still active. Somewhat embarrassed it took someone clear over from Calif. to steer me there but glad you did :-)  Thanks!

Where are you in PA? I am near Reading and have a local club that we could shoot at. I also have access to the Clubhouse so we could shoot inside.Let me know I would enjoy helping you along.

Wow, thank you guys for all the offers. Really very generous. I am in the Meadville area longbowman and will take you up on your offer via PM thank you. Rob thanks for the warning.  I did the same thing 30 years ago starting archery with a compound. I made a lot of mistakes that had I asked for help from someone that knew what they were doing would have saved years of frustration.  I am not going to do a thing with this bow until I have some help and will check out your suggested article.  Also I apologize for trying post a link to a auction site.  I know better now.

Thank you!

Bart

Meadville Archers is a good place for info, also there is a shop in Fairview,Pa. a little north of there that there are a few of us trad guys that meet three days a week and shoot our bows and the bull. Lots of info there also and it is an indoor range out to 40 yards with all the goodies.

Contact me for more info if you are interested.

If you are into 3D, checkout Pine Hill Sportsman's Club (http://www.pinehillsportsman.org/). Great group of guys and good targets.
I've learned that walk in the woods with my father as a child did wonders for me as an adult.
