I'm scared to ask what causes a creek?
« on: December 11, 2011, 11:28:00 AM »
Hello all,

I am scared to ask, but what would cause a creek while drawing my longbow? It is an older Bob Lee model (I bought it used), and when it is drawn, sometimes, lately more often than not, it makes a dull creeking noise. It mostly happens near full draw, I have inspected it for stress fractures/cracks in the limbs, but cannot find any. Could it be the string? It is a pretty old string. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

TK

Is it a one piece or takedown?  Bob Lee takedowns have rubber pieces that fit between the limb and riser.  If yours is missing those, that could cause some creaking noise.

It is a takedown, and it is a little older. I'll have to check it. If it/they are not there, can they be ordered/replaced? Thanks GrayRhino.

Rub some bowstring wax on the riser limb pads and smooth it out. Should cure your creeking noise.

Yeah, my first thought too, Sergio!  Ha!

You could use some moleskin, or cut some rubber pads from an old innertube to put between the limbs and riser.

I wasn't sure of the spelling...lol. Thanks for the info on the limb pockets. I checked and there is nothing there (i.e. rubber, etc.). It smells weird, my dad says leather. I am going to try the bowstring wax, or possibly the moleskin.

Yes, they can be replaced if need be.  Give Bob Lee a call and all will be well, or like Mark said, make your own from an old innertube.  It looks like a rectangle the size of the limb pocket, but with a couple holes in it for the limb bolts to go through.

I like Johnsons paste wax for floors better than string wax.. Coat both surfaces and your crick will flow no more !

My bow is pretty quiet but my shoulder has a 'creek' in it when I draw.
