Quiver Leather Thickness
« on: December 14, 2011, 02:11:00 PM »
Was going to order some leather to build a back quiver.  It will be a Hill type and I want it soft enough to collapse in the middle as a good Hill quiver should.  What "Weight" leather should I order??  I'm guessing about 6oz, but would rather get it right the first time.  Thanks!

For oak tanned(veg tan) leather you could go with 4oz or with oil tanned(latigo) 4oz or 6oz will work good. If you want to line the quiver use 2oz to 4oz for the quiver and line it with thin garment leather, either sueded or full grain.
When lining draw out your quiver and lining and cut them out outside the lines. Use Barge(or other contact cement) on both the main body and the lining, let both dry then put them together. You only get one chance at this so be careful as you put them together. Once together cut out the quiver on the lines and you are ready to stitch or lace it together.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!

I made mine out of veg tanned 5-6oz and it's just the right flex.

I made mine with 5-6 oz pebble grained leather. It's pretty soft, and that's they way I wanted it. No break-in necessary.

I made mine out of 9-10oz vege-tanned leather to allow for deep tooling. It would take a very long time to be as flexible as you are looking for.

I made a bunch of back quivers out of Tandy Blacksmith Sides....I think they were 7-8 oz leather, and the perfect weight.  Soft enough to collapse on the curve of your back and grip the arrows a bit, but just stiff enough to open as you reach over your shoulder for an arrow.  It's soft enough when you can touch your toes and the arrows don't rattle or fall out.  Of course, no one has seen me touch MY toes in several decades!

I have been known to make a quiver occasionaly....
I use Oil Tanned 5/6 oz....
But ya got to watch out, these leather suppliers seam to not know what a specific oz looks like, and they will send whatever they have....
Best to buy in person if ya can....
