This was a good morning, no a great morning! I was going to pack the Windwalker to set up near the top of the mountain but the wind changed my mind. It was all wrong for where I wanted to set up and gusty at times.
I decided to hunt a ladder stand over in a hollow out of the wind. The bonus is this guy strays in the area
The black fox squirrel has always been the holy grail of squirrel hunting in our family. I had a shot at him in October but didn't have blunt. (I have a blunt in the Kodiak quiver). Dad took the pic of him back in Nov.
The ladder
10 minutes after getting in the stand I caught movement. My binos showed the flicker of a white tail and the backside of deer crossing the hollow 50 yards below me. That was all I would see of any deer this morning
The view down the hollow
A little later a gray and fox squirrel were at the top of the hollow across from me. I put the blunt on the string but they never came down.
Things heated up quick when turkeys started calling up on the ridge. I heard another kiki call off to my left and it started heading up the ridge to the others. I put a broadhead on the string and got ready. It came right by me but behind brush where I had NO shot!
Turkeys have been all over our place for the last month. Scratchings all over the mountain.
As I was headed off the ridge I came by "PawPaw's" rock. Its a rock he sit on many mornings. I pictured him sitting there this morning with brown plaid wool coat and khakis. I thought this would be a good picture
No game has been taken so far but I'm enjoying this as much as any hunting I've done in years. I have few more days off during the late season and Kodiak is going out all of them. I'm thinking the Kodiak needs to time in the woods next October as well
