it broke!
« on: December 28, 2011, 12:50:00 PM »
I was out shooting this morning--Ancient Spirits Kadiak #441 60" 55@28" one piece . it broke right in the handle. (serious crack)Wasn't dramatic, but it reminded me that it's a stick--glass or no.

Can anyone fix it? or maybe make the limbs into ILF?
Is it too late to be what I could have been?

Did the old glue line delaminate. I've had that happen with old recurves. I guess the glue gets brittle over the years.

Depending on where & how it cracked you may drill through the riser and pin it with brass rods and epoxy. Clamp it tight until it cures, then sand smooth and refinish.

no, it's pretty much toast. Just a shame to lose the limbs.

Yup. Warf it.

I would try to fit it with a couple of screws and some good epoxy. Can't hurt to try!

Yikes! Hard to believe it broke across the grain of the riser. Still, I think it might be repairable. It would involve drilling down through the shelf and epoxying in some reinforcing rods then adding some overlays to the back of the riser. I'm kind of guessing at that, but that's what I would do if it were mine. I doubt the limbs would be the same if grafted onto another riser (my opinion).

Sorry for your loss, John.

I had a similar situation years ago. I was able to back the riser area with Gordon's Bow Tuff Glass (think that was the name. A bowyer friend gave me a piece), epoxy and brass screws (filed off part of the screw heads after set up for cosmetic reasons). A bit of sanding and new finish and I was able to shoot it with confidence that it would not come apart. Sloppy craftsmanship will not work here but it may be saved as a shooter! Actually recently sold it very cheaply to a friend who raved about what a good shooting bow it is.

Do you think doing a wrap on the handle section like you do with the fiberglass and carbon takedowns would handle the repair.

It can be fixed like Troy said. I would drill and dowell it first with smooth on and a good hardwood dowell. then relieve the entire handle area 1/8 inch an wrap it with impregnated fiberglass cloth. You can then cover that with a leather grip and you are good to go with the same grip profile and all. It will look just like you did a leather grip on it if you do it right. You could also add a heavy glass overlay on the back. That would help too. but I seriously believe it can be saved.

John , God loves you sir or you would have eaten that bow. It came so close to completely blowing up there had to be an angel holding it together.
I have never seen one crack straight across like that. They usually break form the sight window , through the shelf to the deepest part of the grip. That little turkey was going to break right in two.

God bless you, Steve
