I have been hunting a 47# longbow and believe it or not a 650 grain arrow is deadly from it as long as you stay within 25 yards. Might get the job done from further but I haven't tried yet. Shoot your broadhead/arrow set up at plywood and similar materials to test penetration and durability. Those light bows will suprise you.

I would opt for somewhere between 600 and 650 grains for Moose.

Hi Frank.  I shoot 52# with 520gr cedar for moose.  2 blade Zwickey Eskimo.  You may have checked already but in Ontario 50 lbs is the minimum legal for moose.

hi frank

i shoot 47 # as well. last year my set up was a grizzly stik sitka shaft 28.5 inches long and a 200 grain 2 blade, total arrow weight was just a tad over 600.

I killed a bull in 2007 with a very simular set up

My set up for moose this past year after tons of research ended up. 60lbs 125 Zwickey eskimo with 75 steel adapter 640grain finished arrow. I did not get my chance to field test it on moose, but I had run this set up by many experienced moose guys and they all agreed I had an ample set up.
I would recommend more bow weight if you can handle it.  These creatures up close are huge, like a muscular horse.  The good news is if you get one into them (in the right spot) they go down pretty quick.  Enjoy your trip and good luck Joe

I agree, at least 600 grains or more. Though I'll probably be flamed by the light bow advocates, I also think another 10# of bow weight would be advisable.  Moose are very big critters.  Their hide is 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick in most places, and their ribs are big and tough. Even their hair is thick and tough.  Slide one between the ribs and you're good to go.  Hit a rib square on, and you may not get the penetration you need for a clean kill. And yes, I have killed a moose (66# r/d longbow and 725 grain arrow).

Your 47# bow is legal; the minimum called for is 20 kg and you are above that. I would practice as much as possible with 600-650 gn arrows and practice sharpening a good 2 blade like the Abowyer Brown Bear. Practice with your camera too-we are going to want to see the pics!!

Frank I will be going to NF this september for my first moose hunt also! I have been Pm-ing certain people gaining knowledge on what my arrows should weigh. I am looking to use my 52# r/d longbow. Arrow weight will be right at 600grains but I am still up in the air on what my BH will be.. Any suggestions anyone?

Also Frank, where will you be going? Were going to Ray's.

Frank,
Shot a Maine bull with an est. live weight @ 1000 lbs. with a 54# LB and 750 gr. carbon with a Zwickey No Mercy SB up front. Bull was down in about 15 secs. I practiced on a life size target of my own making back to 50 yds. Their size can mess with you as to yardage they are so large. Hope this is helpful and good luck! Todd

have taken 4 moose,.......... collectively 3 of us have taken 12 moose over the last decade..my experience says 600+ grains....one fella shoots a Hill style bow 52# used about 650 grains for two of his moose...I use bows in the 60# range but I BELIEVE LIKE THE REST HERE THAT A SHARP WELL TUNED 600+ GRAIN ARROW WILL DO THE JOB...Moose are wimps when arrowed and bed quicky if undisturbed..they are also suprisingly narrow in width of body cavity .....good luck........

Good advice from the Gang! I too would personally opt for a somewhat heavier poundage bow, but a 47 pounder with a 600+ grain arrow will get the job done if everything goes right.
