Wyoming elk unit max points ?
« on: January 11, 2012, 04:43:00 PM »
I will be applying for a Wyoming elk license with 3 buddies who all have maximum points. We are all over 50 and at least two of my buddies have some physical issues which will make it preferable to hunt terrain that is not super rugged with decent access. We are leaning towards applying in Unit 38 at this point in time. I had a hard time getting into the Wyoming PDF regs. Can anyone tell me for sure if unit 38 has type 9 licences in addition to the regular limited quota licences? It is my understanding that you can bowhunt on the regular limited quota licence if you purchase an archery tag is that correct?  If any one has any specific info on unit 38 you would be willing to share or any alternative suggestions for a unit could you please PM me?   Final question can anyone tell me if there is a spring bear season in unit 38? I thought it might be cool to try and get a spring bear tag in whatever unit we try to draw so a guy could get the lay of the land a little (plus have a good time hunting bears and looking for sheds).     I know I am asking for a lot of info and I appreciate any and all help you can give me!!!
To me, the ultimate challenge in bowhunting is not how far away you can succesfully make a killing shot but rather how close you can get to the animal before shooting.

Yes, 38 has type 9 licenses, and yes, there is a spring bear season there. 38 has some tough country, so if you have physical issues, you might want to think long and hard before applying there. 37 is a bit easier terrain, as is 36. You might look at 45 also; it is lower elevation, but has good elk populations. Area 19 (Laramie Peak) used to have some real trophy bulls, and it is a bit less gnarly than a lot of the Bighorns. You might look at area 68, near Dubois. That area always has leftover type 9 tags (67,68,69), and 68 is the Union Pass area, which is roaded. 67 is steep country with a lot of wilderness, so you would have to have a guide, and 69 is about all wilderness, and straight up. Bottom line, elk live in rugged country, so be prepared to do a bit of physical suffering to get to them (unless you really get lucky).

I am not sure I want to lay all this out here ha ha. Laramie peak is acctually Area 7 (sheep area 19) As Pat mentioned some monster bulls and pretty good hunting. Might be worth a look. Area 38 does have a spring bear season and is a great elk area. There are some big big holes in that area though.

One thing to remember is the elevation of the Big Horns is higher than most are used too. It is a unique mountain range that rises QUICKLY from the valley floor on both the east and west sides. The few places that have elk that are not steep or a tangled mess are hunted a lot and hard.

Good advice above Dan.  I hunted 38 two years ago, and loved it.  But if I had max points again I might do it different.  Give me a call anytime - I'd be happy to share my thoughts.

Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it! Mike, I am replying to your PM. Joe, I will give you a call, thanks for the offer.   Anyone else??? Not looking for honey holes just input on units. Although, if any one feels like giving me gps coordinates to a honey hole I never look a gift horse in the mouth!  :biglaugh:

Hey Mike,
Like an idiot I left my phone in my truck last night. Whip tried to call me last night to. I am going to be at my wifes belated xmas party tonight so it probably would be better if you try me tomorrow if that works for you.

I'll shoot you a PM with my cell if you would like to hear about the unit I hunted last year.  I don't know if I would choose it again and definitely wouldn't with a group of 4.  However, if you want to discuss, I'm more than happy to share my thoughts and experience from it.  PM Sent.
