Looks like Wyoming for Elk this year
« on: January 11, 2012, 07:54:00 PM »
My first bow hunt for elk and only my second elk hunt ever. I'm excited! A life long friend who is in afganistan right now and his buddy will accompany me. We will be on foot and as far away from the ATVs as possible!

Anyone recomend a good area? We have some in mind and will be doing a scouting trip in July I think. It will be a back pack hunt of about ten days.

You realize that if you hunt in designated wilderness in Wyoming, you will have to have a guide? Where are you looking at as far as area choices?

Hmmmm thats a good point. My buddy is a western hunt fanatic. I think he must know that. I have it in an email at work. Areas 88 89 90 I believe, some Western, some North Eastern. I will look into it. Thanks centaur.

My set up will be 56 @28" BW MAII, with 600 gr GT carbons. Most likely either VPA terminators or 200 gr Ace. VPAs fly better with my set up.

Did you draw a tag? Or does Wyoming offer otc tags? I thought Co was the only state that had otc tags for out of state hunters. My info could be off though.

Do you have preference points? I was just looking at the drawing odds for non residents, and you had better be really lucky if you don't have a bunch of points. The odds aren't very good. Don't want to rain on your parade, but that's the facts.
That said, there are almost always leftover 67,68 and 69 tags for archery (type 9). They are any elk tags, and there is a lot of wilderness in those areas, but area 68 has less wilderness, and if you drew, I could point you towards what used to be some good places in area 67 that aren't wilderness. The problem with that is that Ursus Horribilis is common, so you might have to fight a griz for your elk if you got one.

At least in Wyoming without points you do have a chance to draw a tag in a high demand unit.  Although its a small chance it does happen.  Plus you find out the results soon enough to make alternative plans if you don't draw a tag.

As I said in my recent post, I drew a general tag.

Getting in better shape every week. Assembling my gear. I finally found a boot that my feet LOVE! I went with ASOLO.

My pack will be the badlands 2200 if it holds up to this summers training. I'm up to 40 lbs right now.

My set up is a 610 gr, GT5575 arrow(Zwickey delta with 100gr steel insert, 100 gr of brass weigh behind insert) out of my 56lb @28 BW MAII.

My other BH I may use is the 175 gr VPA Terminator. That puts my total arrow weight at about 585.

That set up is *elk-medicine* for sure with a well-placed shot with the Delta (my preference of the two choices)!

Good luck, keep the wind in your face, and don't hesitate to get aggressive....

Shoot straight, Shinken

The same arrow with an aluminum insert in the delta(175gr) flies so much better. Is 10.4 grains per pound enough?

Added 50 grains of weed eater line inside the shaft. Total weight now 636grs. Flys great, impact at 25 is a little lower but most of it is me trying to watch the arrow. That will give me 11 grs per lb. Should be a good set up.

Jim,
Sounds like a good arrow set up for elk, based on what I've read. How long is your draw length? I figured based on your build it would be around 29+ inches. So you are probably pulling around 59 or 60lbs.
I just did a similar thing to my 30" 500 ICS Hunters; I installed a 50grain brass insert, then added about 30 inches of weed eater line and got the total arrow weight w/ 200grain point up to 610-615grains. They fly real good and should do a pretty good job on pigs.
