Dyeing a Felt Hat
« on: July 20, 2007, 01:36:00 PM »
Anyone ever dye a wool felt hat.  I have a tan one that I'd like to make match my wool hunting clothes.  But it's too nice to just start shooting dye on it and have it bleed and look like heck when I'm done.

Thanks Bridog

Never having tried this, but, would not leather dye work to die your hat?

It would prbably only work to make it darker, as I don't know how you could remove the colour that is there already.

A dark brown, or dark green would probably work to 'camo' out your chapeau.

Rit dye will do the job.

I would try large fabric markers, like FabricMates, which can be found at most arts and crafts supply stores.  They come in a wide range of colours, and the marker format would be easier IMO to control than a brush or dye applicator.

I have some bottles of TransTint, a super-concentrated and expensive dye stain for wood. You mix it with denatured alcohol or water, though I always use alcohol. Just my way, I guess!
If I were looking askance at my wool hat, I would likely go that route. That is what is in the house.

But then, I have never used RIT. Could it be that the answer to all our dyeing needs can be found in this ubiquitous, innocuous and inexpensive substance? Nah. Use the expensive, hard-to-find, esoteric stuff. You'll feel better, and more guy-like.

As long as your dying a darker color it's a cinch.  I have done it with the Rit clothes dye from wally world.
