Hog Hunting
« on: January 24, 2012, 01:21:00 AM »
Got the "OK" from the wife (newly weds of 7 months I still think I don't need to get her approval, but I know she has the final say.....that's why I married her.....she usually lets me play   :)  ) Going to OK to hunt hogs the first week in March and I have never hunted hogs before.  Give me some feed back on what to take, what to expect, photos, anything that might help.  I'll be shooting my Kodiak Magnum 55# at 28...I'm assuming this is sufficient?  Works wonders on the whitetail and turkey.

Zach, your set up is more than enough. Shot placement is the important issue. I shoot a 43# long bow with WW heads up front,I like the 3 blade head for every thing. So far it has been good enough for 13 porker's. I have to go again soon because I don't like being stuck on #13!

Hogs are tough.  Look at the shot placement thread at top of board.

metsastaja is correct.  Shoot them in the wrong place and it's a long day!  DO NOT shoot them where you would a deer--gut shot.  Go right up the back edge of the front leg.  Vitals are more forward than a deer.  Study the pictures on the above link very carefully.  And...you are going to have a blast--nothing like hog hunting.

Heavy arrows will help with penetration. Weight forward heavy arrows may be better...Shot placement and sharp multiblade heads(Wensel woodsmans seem popular for hogs) are the keys to a decent blood trail. That right there is a compilation of all my hog hunting knowledge! Others will be able to tell you a lot more than me.

Thanks for the heads up Kip   :)  I think it is around Heavener OK.  I know it's in the east half of the state about 530 miles from Des Moines area.  Im shooting 550 grain arrows with 125 tip with 100 gn inserts or 225 head just depends on arrow, but regardless 225 up front.  Im already restless and I have a month and a half before we head out!

There are lots of good threads on here to read. I highly recommend the hog shot placement thread.
I will be hunting hogs for the first time this year also.
