Am I over spined?
« on: January 27, 2012, 05:00:00 PM »
I shoot a aggressive d/r longbow cut 1/16" from center 54 @ 27.5" with a 14 strand fast flight string. I am shooting a 30.25" 340 spine Traditional Only shaft with a 100 grain brass insert and a 175 grain point. According to Stu's calculator I am pretty close and I think I get good arrow flight. However looking at other's post it looks like I should be shooting a 400 spine. What do you guys think?

Where are you hitting and have you bear shaft tuned?

Are they flying good?

Bare shaft, don't let a calculator tell your bow what to shoot.

I would need a 300 gr point in addition to the 100 gr adapter to get those to tune.

With your draw 400's may be a little stiff. I shoot 400's with 100 grn. brass and 250 grn tips, #53 @ 29".

Like I said I think I get pretty good flight. When I first got these shafts I bare shaft tuned them in for my bow. I haven't checked the bare shaft tune in a while. Yesterday I went out with a field tip and a broadhead arrow. They both flew well after a tiny nock adjustment. I even wet the feathers on the broadhead and it still hit with the field tip which if I have read O.L. Adcock's method correctly this means that I am tuned.

I draw 30" and shoot 340's for all my bows ranging from 54-60lbs , your set-up looks close to some of mine.

Sounds like you are good to go then. Everyone is different, just like every bow, every draw, every release and every other persons form. Reading this thread tells me I am way off with my set up, but the bare shafting I have done says different. center cuts are different, and a whole book of other things, my 400's at 29 1/4 bop fly perfect for me at my 55@28 set up, the 75 inserts and 145 points are far too low by some other people's standards, but work perfect for me. Your set up sounds like it's working for "you", go shoot something and have fun. Lots of people would love their broad heads and feildpoints to match bare shaft or wet feathered.

Looks like an older post, but I just ran across it James. My bow is a 55 pound recurve at 30 inch draw with a fast flight string. I'm shooting full length 340 traditional only with a 125 grain tip and they fly great. I didn't even try the tuning process because they fly so good.

shoot a 500 spine cut to 28.5BOp and use 175 to 200 grain tips and it will work perfect..had same type of bow...a carbon woodland version and 60#@27.5" and this combo was perfect..to use the spine your using now with 200grain tips I had to use a 82# extreme R/D longbow to get bow/arrow combo to fly perfect...have you paper tune or bareshaft your current set up? while you can shoot heavier spines...you will be able to tell difference when you shoot other spines...I cant even use 400 spines unless I shoot above 65# longbows
