Best Broadhead adapters/ footing/inserts etc. ??
« on: February 10, 2012, 04:40:00 PM »
Thinking through all the options for broadheads.

So I pick a broadhead and need a glue-in adapter to screw into my carbons. . . I want a strong system that will not break, but I am not hunting Big African game- just basic North Amer deer species and maybe black bear.

So. . . what do you think is a very adequate-yet strong- system/combo?  (I do not need a .300 win mag for javelina!)

1) Insert:  brass or alum?  (any real difference?)
2) Adapter: Aluminum, steel, (or titanium-but do we really need something that strong and expensive?    :scared:    )
3) Foot the arrow: aluminum footing? what length?

Hopefully that communicates what I am asking?

What combo have you found best?

Thanks
Dan

1) Brass, I like the weight up front.

2) Steel, I like the weight up front.

3) Same length as your insert.

4) Small (3/8") footing at nock end. Shafts can split here on hard frontal impacts.

I am not hunting buffalo, but I do a lot of stumping and these hold up well. I feel good knowing that I have strong components. Just in case.

That's about what I do.You probably won't encounter a problem with aluminum but steel and brass are stronger.Titanium isn't stronger than steel, just lighter and more expensive.

Tom- I agree with the wt up front. I shoot 250 up front on a 530 gr total arrow.

But what about needed strength?  Obviously steel is stronger than aluminum but do we really need that kind of strength for most deer etc. hunting?  That is sort of my real question.

Thanks for any additional thoughts. . . I will just keep learning here.

I have yet to have an aluminum insert fail hunting deer.  Aluminum is strong if it is good quality aluminum.  It is protected in the shaft.  If you foot your shaft, your insert is protected even more.  I like the heavy brass inserts for weight.  They are very durable, but I have bent them stumping enough to wobble a broadhead.

I would be more concerned with a screw in aluminum adaptor than insert.  I have very little experience with the aluminum adaptors, but I would think the narrow threaded section would be easy to bend if your head was a little loose.

If I had to choose one to be aluminum and the other to be a heavier item to hit my point weight for tune , I would go with the aluminum insert and steel adaptor.

The glue in BH adapter is probably the strongest. 1 piece, glue it into your shaft then glue on a BH. Eliminates that skinny thread stem.

These right here-http://www.3riversarchery.com/product.asp?i=4930X

I use a brass insert and a 175 grain screw in broadhead (Woodsman Elite/VPA terminator) If I shot a glue on I would use a steel adaptor or titanium for strength.

Dan, I think you are asking , why use steel?

I ask why not?

I have never read  on TG, "Yeah, I shot a deer and my alum bh adapter failed".

I think your BH choice is way more important than your components.

I use what gives me the weight up front that I want with the broad head of my choice.

Tim at Braveheart swears by at least one mfg of aluminum insert.  Ask him lest I mess that up.

Heck, there were a batch of steel adapters that were faulty and bent so there are no absolutes.

A guy taught me about "over-footing" my GT's with alum and he recommended 3". It's worked for me but I also chamfer both ends to eliminate the "bump" over my shelf pivot point.

IMO, Get good quality components and forget the "super" this or that and use what tunes out for you best!

These have to be the best that I have seen to not have failures, they are kinda steep on price but man they look sweet and super strong. I also suggest using a longer footing than your insert because it creates a harder to break leverage area, if your footing and your insert are the same length then it's the same as having no footing other than for impacts to the front of the shaft. I am also considering an internal footing to change that flex area even more and make a bulletproof area in the front in addition to more weight up front.

198 gr. SS adapter should 'git er done'! There neat, Matt.

I used the one piece Brass but they only go to 125 gr.  I did add solder to the back on some, but still shy of 198gr like those you recommend.

I tend to like a bigger, heavier broad head that 125 gr. myself, so that heavy an insert would wreck havoc for me personally.

But I do like it!!  :)

I like to shoot mine after mounting and then touch up. Using either the KME broad head pro or the knife sharpener, when mounted, tends to be interesting flipping a 29.5" shaft back and forth, but it can be done!  :)

this one piece adapter is alot bigger at the base of the taper..the screw in alum adapter is very week where the stem an the base of the taper meet..I have broke many stump shooting there.
I have never had one break hunting because i only use steel..just my 2C's

We have some new Deluxe 100 grain steel adapters that are very well made, and even zinc coated to protect against corrosion.  We also have the Magnus brand aluminum adapters, which unlike others are made with 7075 aluminum for greater strength.

I've never had a problem with aluminum inserts, but often use the brass for the extra weight.  I have bent a couple aluminum broadhead adapters on extremely hard hits, but never bent one on game.
