Archery Case Designs --- removable arrow holder?
« on: February 11, 2012, 04:39:00 PM »
I'm finishing up my archery case and have already begun thinking about a new version, so have been researching designs where I can find them.

One thing I've noticed (which I hadn't thought about or considered previously) is that most of the vintage cases have removable frames / sub cases for holding arrows --- was this done as a conscious / intentional design for convenience in usage or was it done to facilitate making the case? (So as to avoid the efforts I've had to go to to --- pre-finish the arrow holder and interior of the case, match the size of both pieces and fix the finish where I scuffed the arrow holder cutting the lid off the case)

Here's an example of what I meant by the old style cases w/ removable arrow holder / frame:

Popular Science plans for arrow case

I've been wondering if I shouldn't try a removable arrow frame --- I could hold it in place w/ bullet catches and magnets and it would _hugely_ simplify the construction.

Some of the arrow frames are substantial enough that they look to be usable as a target quiver / stand --- but this seems unlikely to me given how fiddly it would be loading and unloading arrows.

Anyone else have any nifty images of cases for archery equipment? or ideas which I'm overlooking?

For reference, my prototype looks like this:

The final version adds two small compartments, one to either side to hold accessories (moved from along the front edge and delineated w/ wood dividers instead of merely being cut out of foam), but is otherwise un-changed in design (other changes are: larger, nicer wood, nicer hardware).

Managed to get the hinges, ball catches and stay chain on (and to plug holes where I'd broken off 3 steel #4 3/4" wood screws... ::grr:: ) so that just leaves the catches, handle (and reinforcing block), fixing the hinges and spraying w/ lacquer once the weather is nicer and brass corner protectors. And notching the right-hand divider so the cock feathers aren't pressing against it.

Improvements for next time:

- move dividers toward the center so they clear the fletching
- shorter arrow holder so part of the cresting isn't covered up
- wider stock so the lip can be cut w/ a lip as shown in the Popular Science arrow case and the case can be taller
- lidded or removable compartment
- cover arrow holding magnets

Also still need to make a nicer quiver which will fit inside the case (in one of the compartments?) --- made a prototype out of duct tape, but I'm not satisfied w/ the design yet. Though I just put a bit of leather lacing w/ a lanyard knot on my Neet field quiver so it hangs off the handle.

You mentioned breaking off wood screws,if you're using hardwoods (yours looks like maple)it's best to predrill your screw holes AND use some form of lube, which won't effect any stains or finishes you may use later. Pain in the butt, but it saves digging out broken screws.
Hmmmmm. I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but I'm
not sure that what you heard is what I actually meant!

That's some great "old stuff" from Pop. Science!

The prototype was poplar, the new one is ebonized red oak in which I pre-drilled w/ a 5/64" self-centering hinge bit, enlarged the entry point to ~7/64" w/ a gimlet to accommodate the shank and I was tapping the hole for the brass screws using steel screws (lubed w/ bees' wax), which were from a bad lot (the vendor refunded the cost of the screws) --- I managed to find some old screws (made in the U.S.) in stuff I brought home from my father's estate --- none of the old ones have broken and I haven't broken any of the brass screws which I've used yet.
