Habu Vyperkahn vs Silvertip recurve
« on: February 19, 2012, 11:59:00 AM »
I'm curious if anyone out there has both of these bows, and if they can tell me the differences when shooting them? I have a Vyperkahn & have ordered a Silvertip, but am curious as to what others think.

I think your going to have the "Start" of a "Great Collection" of Custom Bows       :clapper:       ... Now once you get a couple 3 or 4 Morrison's, a Kwyk Styk or 2 and that Tall Tines in hand.... your gonna' have a Huge Smile on your face       :goldtooth:      But a somewhat diminished bank account

Ask me how I know.       ;)
[ BTW, yes... at one point I also owned a Habu, but have since traded it off... Mine was a very nice bow]

I've owned both and still have a VK.If you have the VK longbow or hycurve it's IMO  quite different than a Tip recurve.
The Tip recurve has stayed pretty much the same even since Paul was building them.Nothing wrong w/ that, tried and true. The Tip will likely be a bit smoother in draw.Speed don't know and don't care.Craftsmenship dead heet IMO.More artistry w/ a Tip.
Why I didn't stick w/ the Tip?Felt the limb design was a bit noodlley for my preference.Where as the VK limbs are twistproof.
I also prefer the penmanship on the Tip as well.

I have both and love em! I have done some pretty elaborate measuring of these bows at my draw length with two weight arrows; 414 and 505 grains.

Wow, you can't go wrong with either.

I'm going out on a limb here sharing this info because lots of folks don't like this kind of detail.

I have a 2011 Silvertip: 60" 46#@26".
The Habu I'll compare is 2012 Vyperkahn Recurve: 46#@26" -- this is triple carbon and newest of the new (thanks Mike!).

414 Grain/505 Grain Arrow

Silvertip 176 FPS and 163 FPS
Habu 168 FPS and 158 FPS

I also divide the FPS by bow weight to come up with my own "performance" hot index.

The Silvertip is 3.83 and the Habu is 3.65.  The Silvertip is 5% "hotter".

The silvertip is the top performer, according to these measurements of all my bows.  (Most would be shocked to know what #2 is and I ain't saying in public because it cost me about $1,600 LESS than either one of these babies).

Both bows are beautifully made and a joy to shoot. They have pretty different grips. The Habu comes standard with a lower grip, which I like a lot. The Silvertip has a very contoured grip and mine is checkered.

I'll end with this. I should hunt with the Silvertip, but I hunt with the Habu.

I "love" details. The more, the better for me. This is why I do lots of experimentation with my own recurves.

It's nice to see "details" where someone owns both bows in question.

That says a lot for the Tip. It says a lot more for the bow that cost 1600 less. What was that one?
God bless you all, Steve

#2 is a pretty Super bow, oK?  By my measuring strategy it is only 1.3% below the Tip and 5% higher than my Widow PCH.  Maybe I just got lucky?

Good stuff Bowwild,
Your testing is showing a 13fps lose w/ the 505gr arro out of the Tip?
Your VK shows a 10fps lose w/ the 505gr arro??

So you are telling us you paid less than $300 for that #2 bow?

Yep, less than $300 but it was a factory "blem" -- normal was $599.

Yep those are the differences in FPS per arrow. I checked these measurements several times with many shots. I averaged 5-6 shots per bow per arrow. I "wanted" the Habu to be at the top but I don't begrudge the Silvertip that spot. Of course I draw a measley 26" and the Tip s a 58" bow with the Habu being a 62" bow. It is certainly possible I'm getting all the Tip will give a short draw person top efficiency?

It may have something to do with the brace height too. If the Tip has less brace height it will have a longer power stroke. I do agree about the length of the bows though. Especially at that short of draw length. You really need a bow that is built specificaly for your draw length.
You are so right about the Habu grip, Its one of the best I have ever felt.
God bless you, steve

Just guessing...

But did that "blem" come from a production line in WA State?    ;)   If so.... Yes they do make some incredible performing bows.

I love my "old Black Glass/rosewood "Super D".
