fingers are hurting/joints also?
« on: February 21, 2012, 12:30:00 PM »
My fingers on my shooting hand hurt. I'v been shooting alot. I use a thin glove. Iam shooting around 300 arrows a week. Is this to much? thicker glove? or maybe go to a tab? My shooting has really improve with all this practice. I want to keep improving.

Thicker glove, I should think. But I would try shooting a little fewer arrows until the pain goes away. You don't want to damage your joints.

I loved my gloves but I had to go to a tab (Cavalier) last May. That solved my draw hand finger sorness.

I now have a different issue on the bowhand middle finger -- it's called "Trigger Finger" an inflamation of the sheath the tendon rides in. THe finger acts like it has a catch in it. Painful.

May sound silly, but wrap the hurting fingers with ductape and then place the glove over it.  You might be suprised how much it will ease the discomfort when shooting a bunch of arrows.

Had the same problem last year... I was shooting a single layered tab... and went to a Bateman tab that has the cordovan and a layer of suede leather... double the thickness... much less trouble...

Glucosimine and thicker glove is the way to go.  Also use some heat in the form of hot water or a paraffin bath.  Do you tend to have arthritic symptoms in your fingers?

Bowwild, see your PCP and get referred to a Hand Therapist.  SASTM or ASTYM can help.  Otherwise, the surgery is simple and usually has good outcomes.  pm me with questions.

A thicker gove or tab could help.I use a double layer cordovan tab.Your trying to cushion the tendons mostly.I used a howerd hill when i shot a glove with platic inserts in the finger stalls and also a Shultz with nyulon overlays on top of the leather.Good protection. You wont feel the string as well though as with a thin glove. But you get used to that.

A deep hook could help if you are not currantly shooting with that technique? When I used to shoot more off the tips I had more soreness and tenderness in the string hand.I use a deep hook now and have for a long time and I have no issues. Its a stronger hold on the string and secure.

I dont think 300 arrows is a whole lot.Everyone is different though and we need to listen to what our bodies are telling us.But I would cut back since your having pain and discomfort.Maybe only shoot every other day to reduce inflammation and soreness and see if your condition subsides.

A lighter bow may help if the condition becomes chronic.

you definatly dont want to injure the tendons and have the condition desribed above as trigger finger. So play it safe and smart.I had a friend who injured hus shooting fingers shooting heavy compounds years ago and the problem never went away and he needs to se a mechanical release all the time now.

Yep, I'm there too. Have to lay off (even though I'm chompin at the bit to keep going) and let things heal...then thicker glove or tab...be careful to listen to what your body is telling you or things will only get worse.

I do alot stretching. Including my hands and fingers.  Also, if you're experiencing pain, just back off for a couple of days. This helps me.

I experienced the same problem not long after I jumped up in bow weight.  A thicker glove with cordovan tips cleared it right up.

I had a similar problem last year.  My fingers hurt, then went all tingly/numb.  I took a few weeks off and now shoot a little less.  I try not to do any marathon shooting sessions.  I have so much fun shooting that I lose track of time and end up shooting for an hour or more; It's fun but too much of a good thing.

Once my fingers felt more or less normal, I added a layer of leather to the inside of my tab.  Also, I was leaning forward into the target, causing more pressure on my ring-finger; straightening my stance helped quite a bit.  Good form (mine is only about half good) can make a big difference.
