Is my setup up to the task?
«

Hello everyone,
this year I'll be going after desert mule deer in Mexico and was wondering if my bow is enough for mullies. My set up is a 56" morrison ILF recurve 48# @ 28, my DL is only 26.5" and for total arrow weight I was thinking 450 grains. I'm new to trad archery and this will be my first big game hunt with stick and string!
Thanks
David

I'd go with a heavier arrow myself but as always, accuracy is key.

You are shooten around 43-44# at your draw, and an arrow weight around 450- 500. as long as the head is sharp and the arrow is placed correctly, go for it.Just go for it as close as you can get.

The Native American's bows were almost always under 50 pounds and were not nearly as effecient as bows we shoot today. The key to all bowhunting is getting close and a scary sharp broadhead.

A good sharp 2 blade and you should be in business.

WOW,
thank you all
I guess it's very doable, I just can't shoot heavier bows accurately. I'll try to increase arrow weight to 500-550 range and a two blade broadhead. Great Thread Wannabe1! very helpful

I was worried about the same thing with my bow at 45lbs and being new to trad. I experiemented with a heavier point, and I am able to get really good shots and penetration with a heavier tip now. Pretty excited. Good luck to you.

David ... You also might want to get Masters of the Bare Bow III and look into the possibility of increasing your draw length just a bit. A few folks that I know personally have taken Rod's shooting class and all have added some to their draw length because of it. There are several good threads on TG about this topic.
Hope your enjoying that Morrison ..... that weight and a good sharp broad head will be plenty for deer, just keep your shots in your effective range.
Best to ya, Ken

Hi Ken,
How funny that you mention Masters of the barebow III because it should be arriving my house soon. I do have rick's DVD accuracy factory and it did help. Thanks again for that Morrison it is one sweet bow.

David

If given the chance to hunt a mule deer, I would not hesitate to harvest one with my 42# recurve and I would be shooting a 421 grain arrow.
