Need help Quick! Opinion on youth bow...which fiberglass bow?
« on: February 29, 2012, 01:45:00 AM »
Hey Trad Gangers-

Need some help. I didn't plan very well here.  My nephew's birthday is this weekend (I forgot). I want to get him his first bow set.  I feel dumb about this as I have always gotten my girls a Maddog or some **** recurve bows plus my 'Ol Red Bear fiberglass bows to start with.  I want to get my nephew a new fiberglass bow that will last him quite a while...I am scared of getting a piece of crap.  I was looking around...3R has the Sentry yet (50" 20# @ 24"), and the Crusader that replaced the Sentry (54" 15@ 24and 20# @ 28)...I looked ast some other's but they looked lesser quality.  Then there's the first shot jr archery set...

I am thinking just ordering or making arrows seperate, a no-glove, and a belt quiver and guard.

He's turning seven and a natural athlete, strong, and plays hockey. Medium height, stronger build...

I am only supposed to spend $30, but I will fudge up to $50.

What are your thoughts, I have to order ASAP.  Thanks from an embarrased uncle....

Sorry, but I don't know anything about the bows you listed, But maybe someone will post what they know.

I am however, sure that he will be happy to receive a bow for his b-day. Good luck!!!

If you nephew's birthday is this weekend I would agree you did plan poorly but HEY we are all guilty of that at times. Perhaps someone will have a nice used bow that will fit your nephew. Good Luck

If you dig and find reviews from trad guys that know what they are talking about, I am leary of getting him one of those...I have some old kids bows I picked up in the past or maybe I'll wait for the right one...I don't want to get him junk, but then the other part of me says the fiberglass can take that abuse.  I don't know, I'm torn and without a store to look at them I have a hard time deciding.

Luke...nothing wrong with starting out with the fiberglass bows, until you find out whether or not the boy is "serious" enough to up the quality of equipment.   The learning curve is fairly quick, but he can get a start, and I would think if he shows promise....then you can make it a "project" of yours to get him some better stuff, without the time restraints.  Fun stuff...starting out kids!

PSE makes a bow called the Snake Youth Bow. It can be shot right or left and cost is less than $50.

Thanks for the help, guys!I am not a PSE fan, but that snake bow looks to be a good candidate...maybe a little long right now for him,  but certainly a candidate in the future...it actually was more what I expected a Bear to be...nice and thanks.

MR stickman, I have owned some PSE equipment(2 sets of wheels and a Longbow) and my longbow shoots like a dream and I never had a problem with any PSE bow I have owned.

I just picked up a 1965 little bear for my 6 year old, built a lot like my '65 Kodiak.  You'll find all kinds of prices on them.

I had a couple of little bears, not sure the years...they were stiff for my girls when they were younger, but I bet they would work now, thanks...I'll have to look for some....Ipcjon2...I bought a pse recurve once, plastic tips on it and it just seemed poorely made...good to know you don't have any problems with them

I may just wait for a good price on a BP Bronco or something like that for my nephew...or a Darton Dart...I've had a few of those I got for kids and I can refinish them...
