? for Big Jim bow guys
« on: March 01, 2012, 07:24:00 PM »
The bug has hit me again, but I have a question for you guys who own both TCs and Buffalos. How do you compare the bows in regards to feel, smoothness, quietness, and any other shooting characteristics? I love my 56" TC, but wonder if anybody can give feedback as to how the two styles compare. If you own both styles, do you have a clear favorite, and if so why?
Thanks for any input.

Friend, I own buffs and love them.
I shot a couple of TC, and appreciated them:

But I need to say that those 2 TC were far from my shooting weights:
One was the Gentle Giant personal bow and one was my friend Drew's

Both were smooth as butter, so I ordered one for the blind/tree stand

I would say same smoothness, same stability

Hope this helps,
F-Manny

I recently picked up a TC 56", 44# that I had ordered. A 60", 41# Buff that was hanging on the rack caught my eye, and well, you know the rest. It's too early to tell which I will ultimately like the best, but the Buff seems to draw a little smoother, but it may just be the weight difference, though only 3 lbs. Both are quiet, edge maybe to the Buff. I know this isn't any help, my advice is do like me, one of each  :D

I recently picked up 2 of the "Gentle Giant's" personal TC's, and both are 56"... Love them!  One, well both, are 2-pieces but only one is a functional 2-piece (Jim accidently glued one of them together while making it...).  I also picked up a 58" 2-piece that is very nice, but I like the 56" better and my draw is pushing 30"...  I like the medium grip better then the low grip and the 58" has the low grip.  That being said, the bow is almost to smooth for me...  I kinda like the bow to feel like it is just starting to stack at my anchor.  The 56" has that feel, the 58" does not!  If you want a smooth as butter "short" longbow/hybrid whatever you want to call it, Jim's TC is a great choice IMO!

I've never shot a Buff, so I can't comment there...  I do have another 56" TC on order with Jim but it won't be ready till this fall...  Little lighter and "Natural" camo for the late season...

Did I mention I love the Thunderchild?    ;)

What are the actual physical differences in the two? They are both reflex/deflex. Is it mostly in the riser design?

I have a 3 piece buff and by far it draws smooth and I can honestly now shoot for a month and go pick her up and shoot baseballs at 30yds and not have to work at it very much and every thing else I have owned I can't do that even when shooting every day

I had both at the same time, 64" Buffalo and a 58" Tc. I could not percieve any advantage one had over the other. I kept the Tc because of it's size and I already had lots of longer bows.
Having done so much, with so little, for so long, I can now do anything with nothing.

I shot the TC and Buff again tonight, and I simply love them both. While only 3# heavier than the Buff, the TC just seems to drive the arrow, which is a 29" GT 3555, standard insert, 145gr. point, 3/5" LW feathers, noticeably faster. Maybe its my imagination, or that I just haven't got the arrow right for the Buff yet. At this point, if I could only have one, it would be the TC, but I could change my mind in time.

If I remember right which is a big if. Big Jim said the TC has a little more R/D and feels a little better when shot. I have arthritis in my joints (hands) and BJ recommended the TC.

I have not shot one but sure would love too.

I have gone through it many times in my head and can't find a difinitive answer to this question.

As far as most of there atributes, I would say they are nearly even except their maneuverablility and that obviousy goes to the TC. They have both been described by many as dead in the hand, but if you are exceptionally sensitive, I would suggest the TC. I tend to shoot the Buffalo more probably because someone keeps buying my personal TC's. What's up with that??? Oh well, I don't mind and that means never having an old bow.
I do like the way that a quiver fits a Buffalo better however I have gotten used to the way a TC sports it. I am working on a design for the quiver that will fix that issue too.

TC's are certainly lighter, but that is not a good thing for everybody. The TC grip is slightly more similar to that of a recurve if that is  your thing.

They should both be similar in performance if you have the right length for your draw.

That is about it in a nutshell as far as I see it.
Good luck, bigjim

I can't wait to receive my TC!
One thing is sure, I love my buffs and I am eager to try the new TC  BigJim is building for me!

The reason I ordered a TC are:
My friends are shooting them and love them, and I needed a blind bow.

Whatever your choice, go with the beaver tail wrap, mines after one and 2 years of cold, snow, rain and scorching summer heat are still looking brand new

Manny,
I love the beavertail grip on my TC, and my next one will definitely have that as well. Luckily, I have my current TC to keep me company until the next one arrives.

I have them both and shoot them both. My first Big Jim was a Buff so I have a real fondness for that bow. I have hunted with both my Buffs and my TCs and shoot both equally well. If I have to choose my Buff gets the nod for me but I almost always walk out the door if I'm going to hunt from tight places with my TC....  Truly you can't go wrong with either. I am going to Africa in May and because I'm hunting from tree stands and hides I am shooting and preparing with my TC the most but my Buff will be in the bag as back up... All of my Big Jims are takedowns. With his bows it doesn't make sense not to take this option.

I'm on the list for another TC;  Juniper lams and mesquite riser. I have a hunch it will be attractive.   :bigsmyl:

Pat it's going to be a pretty tough act to follow after that amazing Ironwood bow of yours  :)
