I say go get a Samick Sage at around 40#. This will be a great starter bow and can be used later on in your traditional archery life as a bowfishing bow if you so desire. As far as stacking goes any well designed recurve or deflex reflex longbow that's 60-62" long will handle a 29-30" draw. If your draw length is any longer than 30" than a 64" bow will be a good start.

You can search the archives for untwisting limbs and maybe give your old 'curve a second chance!

Hmmm, I didn't know that was possible. That's probably my best option. The twist isn't bad. If I can straighten them out, I'll shoot it until I settle on what expensive toy I want.

Good luck on the twist. I shoot a Christian Mate but can vouch for the Samick Sage as my shooting buddy has one. Good bow, fast and won't break the bank.

I made the switch from compound in the early 90s and haven the looked back. Have fun

Welcome to the gang!!!

Why not get yourself a decent take down. This way you will get used to the grip and get heavier limbs as you progress.

I didn't read all the posts, so excuse me if somebody already covered this, with your draw length you are going to pull over 30 on a recurve if you draw it properly, I shoot 29 on compound and over 30 on recurve. So point is, if you buy a 45lb draw bow, thats 45 at 28" will be over 50 at 30" and as you mentioned stack becomes a problem. Theres usually some old 64" or longer Bear bows in your price range on the market, I know  www.rmsgear.com  who are sponsors on here have them fairly regularly. Keep an eye on their inventory list, at least with them or somebody like them you know the bow is servicable, half the old bows on **** have twisted limbs. Those old Bear Greenies are awsome and you could hunt with them. Good Luck!

If I had it to do all over again, I would find me a trad shop, or someone who had a nice assortment of bows, and go shoot a few bows, before I bought anything.

Take your time, especially if your budget is limited. Two hundred dollars is not much money to buy a good bow. I'm not saying you couldn't find what your looking for, but you still have arrows to think about.

Ted at Raptor Archery (a TG sponsor) has a bunch of used bows on his website at the moment, I'd bet there is one or two there that would work for you.  Prices are pretty good to.

 And welcome to TradGang!

Most mild mannered bow I would suggest is a Howard Hill longbow 68" 45lbs. If you tire of it or want to move onto something higher priced, there are more than enough Hill junkies that will buy it from you.

The more I've read, the more I am leaning toward a longbow. I want to shoot some before I decide though. I've decided to just play with my old black bear recurve this summer while I shoot some bows and decide exactly what I want. No use buying a bow to shoot for 6 months when I already have one. Those Howard Hill bows look nice and a reasonable price range for a first longbow.
