I haven't experimented with many different types of materials but have found soft side of sticky back vecro does pretty good. Got a string with bowhush on it and have decided its the way to go, really works well and isn't as messy looking in the end.

Try the Bowhush that is made by Terry's daughters.  Works great!  I've tried just regular wool yarn, but doesn't work quite as good as the Bowhush.
