how to make a flemish string
« on: July 27, 2007, 10:19:00 PM »
I followed the directions on the how-to forum, and made a flemish string jig. But how do I use it? Thanks for any help.

The string jig is just to get the strands cut so they end at different places (basical to taper out) then you have to take the string bundles off and hand build it.

I think 3 Rivers has a video on thier website showing how to run the string out on the jig.

philil, thanks for the post, but I do have a question. When the directions say to cut right down the middle, between the top nails, Im not sure where it means to cut, can you tell me what you did? Thanks.

Get yourself a copy of Chad Weavers DVD "Doin  the Twist". That'll get you goin and you'll have it for reference when you need it.

Thanks LeRoy!

The reason we (Joe Stark and myself) made the DVD was because most folks can read directions all day long (myself included) and just not "get it".  Making a flemish string (at least doing it right) is a lot like tying shoes--pretty easy to do, but a devil to try to explain on paper.  A video was the best way we knew to do it.  Of the ones I've seen and heard about, there were lots of little details left out, so we made ours with step-by-step, start-to-finish instructions.  We've had folks tell us about their kids watching the DVD, then making a string.

You can look up pages and pages of instructions on making a string, and some of them are pretty good--but if you don't have a basic understanding to start with, it may still look like Chinese arithmetic.

I'm proud for folks that can figure it out by reading instructions, but we have the DVD available for the rest of us.

To answer your question, you will make the cut at the "top" of the board, where you tied off the strand to get started.  A string board is just a masureing stick to wind off the bundles faster.  When you make the cut, you'll have all your separate strands for that bundle.

Here's another vote for "Doin' the Twist"!!!! Chad and Joe do an awesome job describing EVERY little thing you might have a question about in the DVD. And then some!

I've been twisting so many strings that my hands hurt lately and they have been turning out pretty good except for getting the right amount of "back twist"....    Guess I need to start counting twists but my math ain't so good either Chad! But they look better and better every time.

ToddT I can't anwser your question cause  didn't use a stringboard. But there is a video on youtube with dale karch of 3rivers archery using one.

I'm sure the "doing the twist"-DVD is a great help, and I bet it would have saved me some trial and error!
But beeing a cheap student and living in europe kind of limits your choices!

Hope this helps

Oh this might be of help too  http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=046739#000000

I'd agree on the DVD even though I haven't seen it. I was shown by someone or I wouldn't have had a clue. I can make a decent string (not perfect but it works.) I may have to get the dvd to perfect my string making.

The 3rivers video is a good one on how to use the jig but I don't think the 3rivers video covers twisting a string. Thats where the DVD or someone helping comes in handy.

Oh and on your first one. Your hands will probably get pretty tired of tristing LOL

good luck.

I made my first one this week too.  Lots of really short little tips that have to be waxed in, but it is a string.
