Thanks LeRoy!
The reason we (Joe Stark and myself) made the DVD was because most folks can read directions all day long (myself included) and just not "get it". Making a flemish string (at least doing it right) is a lot like tying shoes--pretty easy to do, but a devil to try to explain on paper. A video was the best way we knew to do it. Of the ones I've seen and heard about, there were lots of little details left out, so we made ours with step-by-step, start-to-finish instructions. We've had folks tell us about their kids watching the DVD, then making a string.
You can look up pages and pages of instructions on making a string, and some of them are pretty good--but if you don't have a basic understanding to start with, it may still look like Chinese arithmetic.
I'm proud for folks that can figure it out by reading instructions, but we have the DVD available for the rest of us.
To answer your question, you will make the cut at the "top" of the board, where you tied off the strand to get started. A string board is just a masureing stick to wind off the bundles faster. When you make the cut, you'll have all your separate strands for that bundle.
