How Many Wear and Hunt in CHUKKA Style Boots?
« on: April 07, 2012, 04:17:00 AM »
Hey all,

I have a pair of inexpensive Chukka style boots that I wear pretty often that I like quite a bit.  They were meant more for casual dress than for outdoor stuff like hunting, scouting or fishing and that stuff.

Because I now live and will be hunting in Texas, I started looking at some new Chukkas for when I am ready to replace these.  A pair that caught my eye right off the bat were a pair of FILSON Chukkas.  WOW,, really nice, but expensive at $245.

I know many hunters hold Filson gear in HIGH regard.  I have never owned any of it.  I did see a few other pairs from LLBean, Cabelas and other online retailers.

I thought I would ask you all and see if you all wear and use Chukka boots for hunting, how they work for you in that capacity, and what do you own.

Lastly, I would like to know what you think of FILSON.  How nice are their footwear?  Are they as good as the price would indicate?

Do you think they would be a good stalking footwear for the soil type we have down here in south-east Texas??

Thanks for your time.

I love the chukka style boot, but not for hunting. I like some thing taller - 8"-10" to keep the dirt out when on the trail.
I would like the Filson, I bet, but the price is too much for me. Red Wing, Cabelas and LLB all offer something with a Goretex lining, that I think would last and do the job at 1/2 the price. I like the looks of the Red Wings and will try them as my next pair. I wear them around the yard, farm and town.

In the 60s they wre all the rage. We called them "desert boots" and we all wore them. They were comfortable.

Hunted yesterday morning w/some that had cloth material as the tongue & top of the shoe. They filled w/water (dew) in 20 yards. Have others that work well. Most of the time I wear lighter leather snake leggings w/them.

I bought a pair for stalking and they exceeded my expectations-great fit and brought me back about 50 years! These were shipped by some manufacturer or store in England; inexpensive and the shipping was surprisingly low. Bought them online and can't remember the store, you could likely find some on amazon.

Can not comment on Chukkas for hunting as up in my neck of the woods they are not practical. I do not own any boots/shoes from Filson but a lot of other gear from Filson. Have a few pair of long merino wool socks for about 15 years still holding strong and no holes. I myself rate Filson as they quote Better Outdoor Clothes!

Unless I am mistaken, these, or something similar, were British miltary wear in the desert campaigns as far back as  WWII.  So it is not surprising that so many have found them to be very good outdoor footwear.

Also, aren't these essentially the same shoe we called Beatle boots in the 60's when the Beatles became so popular?

I have the Filson and the Redwing. Both excellent, comfortable and long wearing. The Redwing is considerable cheaper, but then again I like most everything Filson!! Great Quality and boilerplate warrenty.

Filson makes great wool products, although a bit pricey. As for Chukka boots, not for hunting because of the lack of ankle support, regardless of the terrain. If I want light weight, I'll use my upland bird hunting boots from Cabelas, Danner, or something from Redwing, but still 9 - 11" boot.

In snake country, I'd be looking for something with more protection.

LORD you just HAD to bring up SNAKES didn't ya??  I hate them things and they scare me to death.  I guess I picked the wrong state to settle in and try to pig hunt in huh?
 :)

Those Filson Chukka boots really look good and would probably last a long time.  I would be looking at something to work in also.  I'll check out the Redwings too.
So many really nice boots out there.  Then again down here in south TEXAS I may have to get a pair of regular ole COWBOY BOOTS.

Thanks for the info guys.
