Arrow weight = Recurve vs Longbow
« on: April 27, 2012, 02:22:00 PM »
I shoot both recurves and longbows with a preference for either depending on the day of the week, weather conditions, moon phase or any other silly reason. Just like shooting.

The one thing I have realized is when shooting a long bow I really like the "feel" of a heavy arrow. Shooting a recurve the weight of the arrow really doesn't seem to matter.

All of my bows are 48-55# at my draw. When shooting recurves my arrows weight around 480 gn. Shooting my longbows they just "feel" so much better when I add some weight and get them up to 600+.

The only thing I can contribute it too is the mass of the bow.

Anyone else ?

I shoot the same arrow out of both, AD Trad at about 800 gr.

I would bet that it is the mass of the bow, recurve being heavier mitigating hand shock as you stated.

I shoot the same weight arrows out of longbows and recurves, usually about 12 gpp,  give or take a gpp.  For me, a heavier arrow feels good out of either.

I just fine tuned a couple arrows for my new striker longbow. One arrow was 480 and the other 560, the difference is amazing to me. The heavier one just make everything thing seem so smooth.

wont 9 gr per lb go thru anything and also make range estimation easier also the more efficient bow allows you to go lighter w more control the bow that is .years ago i went to a3d and one of the shultz brothers was there selling gloves . i was shooting 3d w  a 68 lb longbow i stopped at his booth got a chance to ask him what he was shooting expecting to see a 75 lb hill no it was a 55 lb self bow of yew asked him if if i could see it well it came back to anchor very easy. how come so light i said respectfully .and he said thats all you need for the game in no america and man could he shoot it .i wish i had listened closer to what he was saying back then my shoulders would probably feel better todaymho.

I know what you mean...But - I agree with arrowflynn on the 9 gpp,
my tall tines recurve(50 lbs) shoots a 540 grain arrow 175 fps...I've  been shooting the same arrow out of my BW Osage(49 lbs), but it only shoots them 162 fps...I've been shooting my tall tines some so the BW with the heavy arrows seems like a dog....I dropped down in arrow weight and got my BW longbow shooting the same speed as my Tall Tines recurve and I really like that extra speed - even though, like you said, the heavier arrows 'feel' better out of my longbow...

Ive gotta go with arrowlauncher.  The heavier arrow takes the handshock out of the lighter weight, straighter grip longbow.  It just feels better with the heavier arrows.  Scott
