Question about dipping caps with fletch lac.
« on: May 12, 2012, 09:02:00 AM »
Never done it before.  Always used wraps.  But my wraps get frayed up front.

Want to try Fletch Lac and dip the caps.

I have the paint, thinner and a short Dip Tube.

Anyone that's done this care to share your secrets?

Also, do you just tape off the top of the cap with painters masking tape?

Thanks in advance...

Oh, and I already know about the smell...

Use a pencil to mark a line on the shaft to where you're going to dip to since markers will bleed. Always undercoat or "prime" with white lacquer to get the best color hue. Test the lacquer with a piece of dowel rod or a pencil for viscosity before actually dipping shafts... The lacquer should drip off very quickly if it is thinned enough. If the lacquer is too thin, the under shaft color or wood grain will show. You may have to dip twice to get the color you desire. Don't worry about a perfectly level dip... Later cresting will take care of this. PLEASE DO THIS IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA! If you hang to dry outside with no wind, gnats or flies are attracted to your  drying shafts... Not good! Have fun and let us know how they turn out.

Don't do it on a humid day. Don't use a fan that can spark or if you smoke. Fumes will blow. I stopped using it years ago and just stain. On carbons spray paint or latex house paint works great with a waterbase poly clear.

When the shaft starts dripping, it should drip for 20-30 seconds.
