To all our vets, past and present, a heartfelt thank you to my brothers and sisters who have served this country.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.

Definitely thank a vet or current service member!

Memorial day is actually just what is says it is.
Remembering the American warriors who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to their country.

Put a flag on a soldiers grave and/or say a prayer(if you are so inclined).
I had to explain this to my students today(and some of the teachers, sadly).

Just read a story about a man who finds the wrecks of pilots lost in the Himalayas during WWII.  They were flying supplies from India to China to fight the Japanese.  Hundreds had their plane get iced over and were lost.

I just returned from my old unit's Army reunion. If you saw a lot of us old guys on the street, you would never know that there was a time when they were heartbreakers and life takers. We had a memorial service for those in our unit who gave all in combat, and the list was long. We had representatives from the current active duty unit that came for the reunion, and they had just returned from a hard tour in Afghanistan. It was great to talk to these soldiers, and to see their professionalism and dedication. If these guys are any example, we are in very good hands in our current military. If you see an active duty military person, let them know how much we appreciate them. Thanks to all vets for their service.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth a war, is much worse. A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. -John Stuart Mill
