2nd European tradgang meeting (pic-heavy)
« on: May 29, 2012, 02:16:00 PM »

Finally,
the long anticipated day was there! Hubert arrived at my home at 12.00 and that would be the beginning of a new madmen meeting! He brought a lot of new bows with him. Just as the year before, we decided to pose with the bows.
From the right to the left you see:
A Whippenstick inferno
Two Cari-bow Peregrines (one from Hubert, one from me)
A Whippenstick Phoenix (new model from Ken; take-down recurve)
A Stegmeyer Longbow (the German Rolls Royce bow, this one is 80 lbs)
A Whippenstick Longbow
A Bearpaw longbow
A Voodoo Elk Antler 3 pce longbow

Yeah, you are right, that is some serious stuff! For those who are interested in knives, those are all Bark River. From the right to the left: the 1855 Hunting Bowie (154 CM), the Canadian Special (A2) and the Bravo-1 (CPM 3V steel)
I think that total collection makes every archery-hearth beating a little bit faster!

After my wife Joke and Hubert were ready with hugging, we left for the Archery range. It was going to be tuff, because we would shoot a LOT of arrows and temperatures were rising to 86 F. Those are tropical temperatures for May, especially for The Netherlands!

When we arrived, we quickly took a first selection of the bows we would shoot. Hubert had two bows for sale: the Peregrine and the Voodoo.

I started with the Peregrine, which is 6 lbs heavier at my draw as  the Peregrine I own myself.,  I made already 12 woodies and also ordered a 8 strands ultra skinny SBD string.

We started right away at the 55 yards (50 meter). This distance would show us the trajectory of our arrows. Then we would know right away if I made the right calculations. I hit the target with my first arrow, even though I never shot this bow.
Hubert was shooting his Whippenstick Longbow, also with my new woodies. If I made the right calculations, these arrows should fly great for his bow too. They did, because he hit the target too at this distance. We shot arrow after arrow at the target so far away and we were enjoying every shot! Our arrows were really flying like laser beams.

I will start a separate topic about the Peregrine; otherwise this story becomes too long. Let me tell you here that I had no trouble at all with the 6 lbs more I had to pull.
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that string! [/i]

The tropical temperature in spite, we kept on shooting as if there would be no tomorrow...

Shooting far distances also means you have to walk a LOT to get your arrows back! So we gave ourselves a real work-out here.

Then I moved over to the Voodoo take down longbow with Elk antler riser. Let me tell you one thing: this bow shoots as beautiful as it looks.  Smoking fast and really death quiet in the hand. The weight of the bow offers the best of two worlds: between a recurve with heavy riser and a longbow. So for whom a recurve is too heavy and a longbow too light, the Voodoo is perfect!  I had a hard time giving it back to Hubert.

Speaking off: he started to shoot his brand new Whippenstick takedown: the Phoenix (as a matter of fact, it is that new that it isn’t even on Ken’s site yet) this takedown recurve really rocks! Craftsmanship all the way, smokin’n fast and a real shooting machine. Hubert was shooting it like he owned that bow for years.
I shot it several times and I was impressed. But I had to focus on my buy: Peregrine or Voodoo?

We decided to shoot from a more realistic distance: 32 yards. Again I compared the Peregrine with the Voodoo. We were shooting at 3D vulgar and we didn’t miss a lot.

I made a separate topic about it already; but for those we missed it: Hubert took a car-nav box with him, which broke down. We started to shoot at that at 35 yards. We hit it each with our third arrow. Amazingly enough, I shot exactly in the tiny hole Hubert made with his arrow, what are the odds on that? I destroyed it with my 5th arrow and that was the end off the fun and justice was done…..

We shot a variety of bows, but I kept on coming back on the Voodoo and the Peregrine. In the end I decided to buy the Peregrine. It was a close finish. The Peregrine however, has a predefined grip, which fits your hand securely. Shot after shot you have very consistent placing of the hand, even without looking. This ensures you shoot the bow the same way every time. Further more; the Peregrine has a real sight widow at the riser, where the Voodoo is only cut out a bit. Since I am holding my bow vertical when I shoot, the rather thick riser of the Voodoo was a little bit in the way when aiming. Canting the bow a little bit would solve that problem, but that is not the way I shoot. And because I own already a Peregrine, it will be very easy to change from bow, because they shoot the same.

So I kept on shooting with the Peregrine and Hubert was having fun wit his Whippenstick, Suddenly we realized it was already 18.30, meaning we had been non-stop shooting for 5 hours! But it felt like one hour. We must have shot hundreds and hundreds of arrows!

Satisfied and burned by the sun, we went home, were the BBQ was waiting. I prepared everything in the morning, so only thing I had to do was get the fire in. Then I taught Hubert how to make the perfect BBQ sauce. All natural, very easy to make and delicious! You can also use it to marinate your meat. For those who are interested, pm me!

Then we started the BBQ and kept on eating. Of course we had some beers and wines. We talked and talked and suddenly it was 3.30 in the morning. Definitely time to go to bed!
In the morning we had breakfast and then it was time for Hubert to leave again to Germany.
What a great day it was. Joke and I will miss Hubert, but the good news is we will visit Hubert and his family in July…..
