Ash for nocks?? (photo added)

Hi All,

Would ash work well as nocks, spliced onto the tail of an arrow?

I wouldn't see why not. I had a dozen ash shafts once and no matter what you did you couldn't break em. I even had a raccoon chew on one and it still was safe. Wish I had more of them.

I'm wanting to experiment with something like this, and thought the tough ash would protect the nock end of the arrow.

Nothing is going to protect a nock if it's struck by another arrow. Check-out aluminum nocks. I've seen them discussed elswhere here.  :archer:

It might work, just make sure the string groove is cut perpendicular to the grain.  I would be a little concerned about how thin that wood is though.  When you release the string that nock is going to have a lot of weight on it...You should let a friend shoot the first few.   :D

Ash would definitely work as a hardwood insert...

Iohkus,

I'm not concerned about hitting the nock with another arrow....I loose a nock that way now and again.  I want to experiment with a style of archery that uses this type of nock.  I've got four dozen arrow shafts, and will splice an inch or two onto the nock end of the shaft knowing the shaft material would get beat up much faster than ash (or other tough wood).

Ash would be one of the tougher woods to use in this manner. Not sure if Ash would be THE toughest. ANY dense wood is going to add some weight to the shaft, but may not be enough to worry about. Personally, I'm very interested in making up some bamboo shafts -- pretty tough when wraped with reinforcing thread!

I have done this with Reparrow foOtings, and it worked well. I used walnut, but I have shot ash arrows and they are tough as nails.
