arrow spine help for selfbow
« on: June 12, 2012, 10:34:00 PM »
Having absolutely no experience with selfbows, I could really use some help finding the correct arrows for my daughter's selfbow. She's currently shooting some cedars that I got for her many years ago, but there's a lot of side whip in the flight. (I don't recall what spine they are, but I know it was fairly light.)
Her bow is a beautiful osage selfbow that's 61 1/2" long, tip to tip. Right now the brace height is at 7 1/4". Her bow is 25#@ her 24" draw.
Any suggestions for finding the right arrow?
Thanks.

Gary:  I have something I think would work (26-inch long 5/16 cedars spined about 25-30#).  Are you going to Compton's this weekend?  Could get them to you there.  Or send me your address and I'll send off a few to try.

you can get away with a slightly lighter spine for your arrow shafts, especially if the bow is not center shot. the most forgiving of spine in an arrow is the use of hillcane shafts.i have been introduced to hill cane shafts 2 yrs ago and love them. they can be made to a specific spine but will work for a variety of different poundage bows. they are almost indestructible, barring hitting rocks or getting the points buried into hard tree stumps. however they do take some time to make. i hope this helps. rv

Thanks for the cane idea. She doesn't hunt, but does enjoy shooting for the sake of seeing the arrow fly. She just got out of college and still enjoys a stump shooting session with her old Dad. I must have done something right. I need to find the correct arrows for some accuracy, though. Her shooting form is solid, it's the arrow flight that stinks.

I have been shooting longbows (lamilated w/shelf) for quite a long time, and always have had no problem tunning arrows for them. Then I deceided I needed an English longbow and shoot off the knuckle. Man did I have fits for a very long time. The bow is 72" long and is 47#@28". The brace height is 6 5/8". (all arrows are cedar 29" from nock valley to bop and have a tip weight of 125) I tried 35-40 spined (too stiff), tried 30-35 spined (too stiff), then I finally found some 25-30 spined arrows and finally they worked. My modern longbows use arrows that are spined higher than their draw weight. I had no idea I would have to drop soooo low in spine for the self bow. Good luck brother. >>------->
