clamping BH in the KME
« on: June 19, 2012, 10:46:00 PM »
i just read the How To JimB did awhile back on single bevel sharpening with the KME. i have been struggling with the KME. i belive that the KME Bh sharpener is fool proof. im just not having much luck with single or double bevel sharpening. one thing i did noticed is that Jim clamped the Bh diffrent then i have been doing. i clamp mine with the clamp itself running alnog the furrule lenght ways. Jims is slightly diffrent. refer to the link and pic on page 1 about half way down to see Jims method.

i am no expert although i did figure out how to sharpen a tree shark in this jig (pats self on back LOL) But i think the trick is really to get the blade parralell to the back edge of the clamp. Also take into account the angle on the head as it may take a lil more time like he described in his post... I simply hold the jig and run a file over them to get the angle right.. after that its off to the stones..

That is what I do.I clamp so the edge to be sharpened is parallel to the rear of the clamp.

Coloring the blade edge is important as is staying with the coarsest stone until you have completely developed a sharp edge, full length, before going to the finer stones. If you show some patience with the coarse stone,it will go quickly after that.If you don't get it sharp with the coarse grit first,it probably will never happen. You will just be polishing a dull edge with increasingly finer grits.

If you have any problems at all, don't hesitate to call Ron at KME.Their customer service is second to none and you will have the hang of it when you get off the phone.Good luck with it.

The clamp he is using in that tutorial is the two blade broadhead clamp. It also comes with a thin bleeder blade clamp. Are you using it instead of this one?

5th picture down on page 1.
"Clamping the broadhead.I want a repeatable clamp so I put the rear of the broadhead blade at the edge of the clamp and the point of the clamp at the tip of the broadhead's ferrule. The blade edge should be parallel with the rear edge of the clamp."

Kevin,

Sorry for the delay,

I saw this thread yesterday and then got a phone call later... thought it was you but it turns out that it was someone else with a similar question. Give me a call later today and we'll get it sharp pretty quick. Thanks and have a look at this:

Last week I was ready to put my KME knife sharpener and my new Kodiak heads in the classifieds. I probably spent over an hour trying to get one sharp enough to shave with without much success. I finally gave up and called Ron; this guy is really amazing on phone. He not only explains how and what to do but also explains why. I now have very sharp broadheads. Give him a call, you won't regret it.

As I've said numerous times before, the Service and support Ron gives is un-believable...

It is refreshing to have a system that is so easy to get a broadhead shaving sharp...

What folks dont understand is you can put the two blade head in the clamp two ways and one way is wrong. If you put it in wrong the thick part of the clamp will hit the file or stone and you will be grinding the clamp and the tip of the broadhaed and screw up the angle.
