First 3D shoot confirms the addage...
« on: June 22, 2012, 03:30:00 PM »
The worst day of shooting is still better than the best day of work....

I started off the day with 5 arrows and finished with one useable arrow.  I lost 4 nock points, two field tips, one arrow was completely destroyed when it hit a piece of rebar holding a target.

Some of the shots were beyond my skill level (35 yards) so the complete misses were devastating to my arrow supply!

I did well on the 20 yard and closer targets, and I learned that I don't like a quiver attached to my bow, it made it feel unbalanced while carrying around from target to target.

This was my sons third 3D and he keeps building his skills and score, so I'm proud of him, just frustrated that my pretty wood arrow supply is dwindling!

I had lost one other arrow when my target fell off a shelf with an arrow in it and of course it snapped!

I'm considering getting a set of carbons for 3D.

Just needed to vent....

Lost arrows are all part of the learning curve, sounds like you had fun anyway tho.
Also, hitting metal with a carbon arrow can produce a pretty impressive "break"...

My son and I shot a 16 target 3D course last nite with our Longwalkers and he smoked me on darn near every target  I started with a half-dozen arrows and somehow managed not to lose or break any of them.

Keep at it, it will get better. The first 3D shoot I went to with a trad bow I lost, bent, or broke every arrow in my quiver and had to borrow one to shoot the last target. I still lose or break on every now and then but it is not too bad now.

Oh yeah, that adage is right on, too.

After shooting Hummingbird recurve w/ carbon-wanted to go Trad.[as trad as my bowrack goes]. Shot Tomahawk T/D and wooden splash pattern arrows[sound better than they look] , they looked cool flying thru the air.
Everytime it gets boring-try a different style.
Hang in there, better shooting and safer arrows are in the future. Thanks, Roy
Maybe it is time to shoot what I have on the rack

Angel De, just shoot for fun for a few 3d shoots. If the shot is too far or dosn't feel right then move up.

Just keep score for you, don't turn it in. After a while with more confidence you will be shooting at longer distances and enjoying yourself. Good luck and enjoy.

If you're affraid of losing/breaking arrows, you probably should stay away from 3D shoots.  It's just part of the price to play the game.

Some guys rate how well they did at a 3D by their score or some % of possible score. I rate how well I did at a 3D by how many arrows I have left over.

When I used to shoot field archery and paper animals back in the 70s some of us considered that a good day. Arrows are the expendable part of the equation.

I shoot 3-D but I shoot from where I want and I never keep score, It"s good practice and good clean fun.

I think for next time I'll move up to where I'm comfortable,

and I need to order some more shafts....

My son only lost one arrow, but they have a lost and found box at the range.

I used to have the same problem. Lack of form and a bit of target panic can wreak havoc with the arrow supply. Just got home earlier from our rendezvous. Shot 4 rounds of 12 targets each this weekend and shot another shoot several weeks ago with a wicked practice round all brushed in and di it all with the same cedar arrow. That gives you a bit more confidence, which is a big part of hitting or missing. If you believe you will hit what you are shooting at you have a much better chance.
