Help design my HHA longbow
« on: July 03, 2012, 06:16:00 PM »
Howdy all!,

So I'm going to order a bow from HHA very soon but i want some help picking out the particulars.

So far i am thinking the redman, with an osage riser, natural coloured stitched wrapping.

I was also thinking having it made 70 long and 70# at my 30 draw length and string follow.

Now all this being said. I still dont know if this would equal to being a good bow.

Can someone please tell me the goods and bads of my decisions?

I dont plan on getting tip overlays but do you think i should?

thanking you all in advance!

Basil

With your draw length you are spot on by ordering a 70" bow. I think Craig from HHA can also make you up a 72", but I dont think you will get any stack out of the 70".

Osage will make a great riser choice due to the extra weight of the dense osage, Cocobola is good for that to and is what I went with on my Tembo.

As far as Handle wrap and tip overlays the choice is yours and I dont think you will notice any difference if you have a tip overlay or not.

I really like the antler tip overlay "just my preference".

So far, I think your ideas are fine and will serve well. They will look nice, also. Personally, I would go with the tip overlays just in case I decided to use FF somewhere along the way. I see no downside to your choice other than its going to your house instead of mine.

I just ordered and recieved my new HHA bow.  You may know everything I am about to tell you so bare with me as it may help someone else.  When you look at the HHA website you see a number of their standard models (Wesley Special, Cheeta, Redman, etc).  Just understand you can do any combination of woods on limbs and risers for the same price.  You are not stuck to there listed models.  You can pick inscriptions on your limbs, riser, etc.  it's the same price as they charge by the number of laminations.  My new bow is all Becote, limb lambs and riser, with two cores of carmalized boo under clear glass.  So since I have 4 wood lams it cost the same as Cheeta ($550).  They also have more woods then what is listed on their website.  Just think about what you want as they can do it without an increase in cost.  Just call them.  Hope I helped.  Took me three bows from them to figure this out.

This may sound stupid. But is there a post that someone can point me to that compares ff to non ff strings?

It is in the hill thread. To me it seemed like most preferred ff. the nice thing is all craigs bows are ff ready even without overlays. You can use whatever material you prefer

Yes all HHA bows are ready for fast flight with or without tip overlays.

Non fast flight will be a B-50 string. A fast flight string will be one of the many variations like TS1, 450, astroflight, and a few others.

I personally like the fast flight. Very little hand shock as compared to the B-50 string which had a little more handshock but still not real bad.

For me I like to make up a skinny Fast flight string and pad the loops, just a little thump felt at release and the arrow is on it's way.
