Bow blew up on me tonight...
« on: July 11, 2012, 08:44:00 PM »
Well, just a little bit ago I was shooting my Black Timber 3 Piece T/D recurve.

I drew back and as I released from full draw I heard what sounded like a gun shot and my arrow was cast lightly about 10 feet in front of me.

I looked down at my bow and the string was broken at the bottom loop. I initially thought the string breaking is what caused what happened.

However, further investigation revealed that the yellow nock on my arrow had broken in half at the shot, causing none of the energy to go into the arrow thus casting it only about 10 feet. This caused me to dry fire my bow essentially and the bottom limb tip has seperated in two.

I don't know if it will be repairable or if any of the rest of the bow is damaged somehow. I am fortunate to not lose my eyes or anything. I am going to contact the bowyer and maybe he can just make me another identical limb to replace that one....

What kind of nock. There was a post a day or two ago about the GT nocks doing the same thing....maybe someone can post a link.
Sorry to hear about you bow.  Glad you did not get hurt!

Here it is.

Glad you're okay!  And, like Bisch said to me about a month ago when my riser cracked from the same type of incident.....I'm sorry for your loss.

Hopefully your bowyer will take as great of care of you as mine did.

I blew up a limb on my Black Widow recurve by accidentally dry-firing it.  (Loose nock slipped off the string when I drew, and I didn't realize it.)

I was very sad.

Big understatement.

It's tough on a bow when it dry-fires on a 31-inch draw.  Ripped the limb tip about 2 inches south on the top limb.

Yes, I was very sad.

Very sad when something like this happens. Hopefully your Bowyer will help you out. But I would reccomend replacing BOTH limbs just incase. I hope it all gets worked out!

Glad you weren't hurt, bows are expensive to replace but eyes are another story.

My wife dry-fired her bow, breaking the string and the only damage was the brass nock hitting the riser making a large gash, Looked like it had been shot with a pellet rifle. She would not admitt to a dry-fire until she counted the arrows in her quiver.

That is depressing!  At least you are alright!

Wow, I'm glad you're not hurt. I had the same thing happen to me yesterday as well. I had a gold tip nock break in the shaft as I released. I had no idea what happened and it was like dry firing the bow, not to mention the big mark on my arm (and the other mark in my pants.....).

I was shooting a Caribow Slynx but it seems none the worse for wear. I'll keep looking but I guess I was lucky.

Thx to this site, I went out and did some searches and found I'm not alone with these nocks exploding (now I find out....). I'm playing phone tag with the area rep right now. I hope there's a good solution. I can't see risking a bow over a faulty nock design.

I'm very sorry about your bow.

I have a scar on my left hand from where a lamination went through it when a nock decided to give up the ghost and the top limb came apart. If my string had broke I would have been better off.

terrible feeling. I had one bust at full draw and man what a sound it made. Bowyer replaced it and zero issues now. That same bow had a string snap on shot a month or so before so im guessing maybe that had something to do with it.  No injuries on that on ethier.  Hope things get fixed up for you fast

Any bow explosion you walk away from is a good one, glad you're okay, mine caused minor bruising and major cursing. I hope that you can replace the limb and that if there is a nock problem from the factory that someone figures it out and lets them know before somebody does get hurt.

I sent some close up photos to Craig Warren and he told me that he is going to attempt to make the repair for me for free.

WOW! That is incredibly generous. I am going to ship the limb off to him ASAP, and hopefully it is indeed fixable.

I had one explode-it flew further than the arrow! I had no idea what happened! All of a sudden there was a loud noise and my hands were empty! It is really scary; but if you are unscathed the bow can always be replaced along with underwear.
