Looking for a "DIY Brass Insert" post
« on: July 24, 2012, 12:53:00 PM »
There was a post a while back, a how-to for DIY brass inserts for carbons. You thread the back end of an aluminum insert and insert/ epoxy in a brass screw from the hardware store in the back end. Post gave screw sizes, dia and weights, etc. You could make brass inserts for a fraction of the price.

Sound familiar to anyone?

I don't remember the thread.
The screw thread size would be 8-32 and a grain scale would be,used to get the weight.

It's here somewhere.  I remember it because I do that as well.

Works good, too.

Macbow is right on the 8/32 thread size. I have done the same thing in some carbons .  It works pretty good. I did notice some noise in the first ones I did. I don't know why. The others did not make noise. Maybe I used different glue?

I think I found the thread you were looking for. I tried it with some CE90's I was trying to load up for my not-cut-to-center longbow. The Carbon Express aluminum inserts were already threaded 8x32 all the way through, so I just cut the heads off some screws and ground the length to give me a total of 75 gr - insert and weight.

I had some 175gr points in the proper diameter for those skinny shafts, giving me 255 total up front. They pull much easier out of my bag target than a larger fieldpoint. Fly like a dream.

I was checking some brass inserts from GT and the threads on them aren't cut cleanly all the way through, so I ran an 8x32 tap through them. Allows a much easier insertion of the screws. Just a thought.

Bladepeek: Where did you find those heavy small diameter fieldpoints?
Hmmmmm. I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but I'm
not sure that what you heard is what I actually meant!

What about using a brass rod to do an internal footing of your shaft.  For example I use carbon express terminator 6075 and am using 100gr brass inserts and 125gr heads.  I wonder if they make a smooth rod (not threaded) that would fit the inside diameter of my shafts? Just epoxy it in with the insert by pushing it in and the aluminum insert right in front of it, let it sit head side down until dry??
