If going to make mock scrapes doing it in funnels and make within your comfortable shooting range from a good tree with plenty of cover that you plan to hunt out of. Mock scrapes are a great way to inventory what you got. If placed in funnel area a mature deer may not work it over, now or never, but he most times will check it out to see what imature deer are frequenting it. Also if a good funnel is selected other obstacles can be made to funnel deer through the mock scrape area like creating a downed tree, etc to put the odds in your favor for that perfect 15 yarder the 1st of november. Dont create mock scrapes just to get pictures to whooo over. Create mock scrapes in areas that you think you can kill what is on the pictures come novemeber. Don't create a mock scrape without a licking branch. If a licking branch is not there where you need to take the shot, build one. Bobby Worthington has some great philosophy and writing on creating mock scrapes and licking branches. It is highly recommended if serious about implementing mock scrapes into your hunting regime. But the title of the thread is correct. The time is now, if not earlier to start doing this. Also, rubber boots, rubber gloves, all the scent control you can muster is critical, and if you put a camera up over it dont ride the 4 wheeler to it ever 3 days with the family to pull the camera card. Little different business than putting a camera up over a mineral lick or corn pile. If get picture of something you want to shoot get stand set early and stay out until rut starts.
