almost time to start mock scrapes
« on: July 24, 2012, 09:10:00 PM »
Last bow season i tried using mock scrapes and THEY WORKED !! I made them how an old timer told me too and the results were great. He never used deer scents or deer urine. He only used his own urine by peeing in the scrapes. I put a trail camera at one of my mock scrapes last season and every buck that came by hit the scrape.I killed my best buck ever after i watched him hit two of my mock scrapes,an ancient 240lb 7 point.I can't wait until this season!

Let me get this straight.  You scrape it up and piss in it, and the bucks check it out?  What time of year are you starting these scrapes?

Im intrigued. Can someone post pics or give a better how to. Are these ground scrapes or tree scrapes?
Now then, get your weapons, your quiver and your bow and go out into the open country to hunt some wild game for me.- Genesis 27:3

Licking branches are already being hit.  Last year I had a cluster of vines that I took hundreds of pics under before September.  Gotta find the right branch, but they are already on them.  They are the hub of their social network.

If going to make mock scrapes doing it in funnels and make within your comfortable shooting range from a good tree with plenty of cover that you plan to hunt out of.  Mock scrapes are a great way to inventory what you got.  If placed in funnel area a mature deer may not work it over, now or never, but he most times will check it out to see what imature deer are frequenting it.  Also if a good funnel is selected other obstacles can be made to funnel deer through the mock scrape area like creating a downed tree, etc to put the odds in your favor for that perfect 15 yarder the 1st of november.  Dont create mock scrapes just to get pictures to whooo over.  Create mock scrapes in areas that you think you can kill what is on the pictures come novemeber.  Don't create a mock scrape without a licking branch.  If a licking branch is not there where you need to take the shot, build one.  Bobby Worthington has some great philosophy and writing on creating mock scrapes and licking branches.  It is highly recommended if serious about implementing mock scrapes into your hunting regime.  But the title of the thread is correct.  The time is now, if not earlier to start doing this. Also, rubber boots, rubber gloves, all the scent control you can muster is critical, and if you put a camera up over it dont ride the 4 wheeler to it ever 3 days with the family to pull the camera card.  Little different business than putting a camera up over a mineral lick or corn pile.  If get picture of something you want to shoot get stand set early and stay out until rut starts.

Yup just scrape the ground up under an overhanging limb and piss in it. It's the testosterone in the male urine that attracts the buck and i just checked the first one i made and it has deer tracks in it.I have been told by old timers that they work year round but have not tried that yet.I also never use any kind of scent control because i believe if the deer get used to your scent around the mock scrapes come hunting season they don't mind your sent around and i have seen no reaction from the deer from my scent yet.I'm going to put my trail camera on the mock scrape soon to see what i get hitting it.

used to have a buddy that had funnel in wall of taxidermist shop.  Pretty much insisted that you urinate in it before you left.  Bottled it up put catchy sticker on the bottle and sold it.  Folks swore by it and funny thing was when they mentioned putting a dab here and there on them.  Always wanted to tell them you could piss in the wind for free.

Interesting. Went scouting last weekend and found what looked like a number of scrapes in funnel areas that where not there the week before!

The old timer also told me that during the rut he used to get his wife to piss in a bottle for him and he would pour it in the mock scrapes. The estrogen in the female urine makes the bucks think a doe is hanging in the area.I have not had any luck getting my wife to piss in a bottle for me yet so i will stick to my piss for now, lol. If you think about it can a deer tell human urine from deer urine? By using your own urine you just can't get it any fresher than that.
