Tip overlays on a hill bow

Whoo-hooo! Two weeks? I ordered a Tembo last Thursday. (No limb tips, just a wedge.) I called Craig Friday afternoon because I had forgotten to mention that I shoot split finger, as opposed to three under--and he said he had already glued up the riser! Can any other custom bowyer even come close to that kind of response time? (This will be my third Hill.) Man, I can't wait!

How does the presence or absence of overlays determine whether or not a not a bow can handle a fastflite type sting?

The idea is that the tip overlays provide more margin of protection (thicker limb tips).  However, my Northern Mist Shelton and Classic have no overlays, just a tip wedge, and Steve supplies them with D97 or similar string.  Seem to do fine.

I went with the tip overlays, not for protection(thicker limb tips) or FF compatibility(the wedge takes care of that).  I went with them because I feel it gives the bow a more "custom" look.  This is my first, and most likely only, custom bow and I wanted to dress it up a little more than normal!  

I am so excited wait to get it.  I was at my brother's house yesterday and he was showing his new Hoyt C-bow.  While he was signing the praises of how fast and smooth it is, he was also complaining of its heaviness.  He will NEVER shoot trad, but I can't wait to see his face when I put this bow in his hand and he sees how light it is.

My Big five has no tip overlays, just the black wedge that accents my Black glass back and Brown glass belly just fine....
   And the tip thickness is 3/8" no worries about a string cutting thru that anytime soon....
   Not saying a nice overlay matching the riser is not nice either....
   My bow Named "Just passable" is plain jane all business....
   As far as wait time, not much of one....
I sent mine back for a weight reduction and I had it back in 2 weeks time, mind you a week or more of that was travel time....
   Someday I will get another one, Simple no shelf shoot off the hand ambi....

I hear ya Mike.  I know I say this is likely to be my only custom bow, but I can already feel the need for another Hill.  A different model next time and maybe no overlays.

I just like the look of tip overlays.  You don't need them for FF or other non stretch bow strings for longbows though.

Black fiberglass with bamboo tip overlay is a  original Schultz HH that I had Craig reduce weight & match tips to the bamboo lams.
